Hey guys.

Just bought a 2011 Audi S3 and I'm having some issues with the sat nav/MMI.

The MMI works fine for everything from radio to cd's to my iPod. The problem occurs when it comes to using the sat nav. I have the original disc the car came with which is undamaged and is a genuine copy but every time i put the disc in it comes up with 'Please insert navigation medium'. The page which shows the status of the dvd rom and SD cards shows the dvd to be 'Unknown' and after searching i found it should read some sort of information regarding the nav disc. Therefore, the MMI recognises something is inside but doesn't know what the hell it is. I also tried a DVD cleaning disc which also said 'Unknown' and didn't help. The disc was supposed to have audio tracks to know its working and it didn't play anything.

I'm not so worried as i have a pretty good third party warranty that covers me for £5k per claim and £200 an hour labour so I'm able to take it to Audi but as i think the system is just wearing down my cover for wear and tear doesn't start until 30 days after i bought the car so i don't want to take it in yet. I will probably get a newer disc from them anyway but as its sat nav unit I'm not really sure what, if anything, audi technicians can do.

Anyone else had this issue? If so, what did you do?

I had the same problem on an A4. It would happen at random with no explanation and then clear the next day. In the end I solved it by cleaning the disc and moving it from the CD changer in the glove box to the one in the head unit.

I'd guess at the laser head in the disc reader being faulty. They'll generally play CDs ok but won't read the nav disc. It's a common issue. You can replace the parts, although you can't get them from audi. They'd just sell you a new unit. Good luck with claiming that on a an aftermarket warranty.

Gonna have a go at cleaning it myself first anyway. The aftermarket warranty I have includes multimedia and sat nav as optional extras I added so i can't see any reason how they'll get out of it.

RNSE does suffer from this; they're fairly simple units to strip down.

Drop of isopropanol on a cotton bud to clean the laser usually sorts it.

As above, but just to add that because the DVD drive used for the nav disc doesn't play DVD media files, a DVD cleaning disc won't be recognised - you need to use a CD lens cleaner. I've got an Ixos one which is pretty decent.

Couple of runs through with that or even a strip down might solve it, but if the laser is dodgy it'd be better to get a factory exchange unit under warranty if someone else is paying. Is it a later unit with chrome on the volume knob?

Have a really close look at the disc surface as well - if it's tinged blue at all it's probably a copy disc but potentially a good quality printed top surface.

My early RNS-E would sometimes fail to read copied media but the original factory disc would always work.

DuraAce - any info on where to get parts you mentioned, My head unit looks like it has the same problem. CD cleaning disc hasn't resolved, not yet opened up to try cleaning with cotton bud / alcohol.

Have you got it in the head unit itself rather than the CD changer? Only ask as someone above mentioned they had it in the changer.
