Alrighty, need some advice!

I've got a Golf 2.0 GT TDi and the engine management light has come on. My local garage did a freebie for me and plugged it in to see the fault. I got fault code 012547 (if that means anything to most of you). The mechanic showed me that the manifold flap/controller lid needs replacing. £310+VAT. Fun.

I phoned around a bit today and a different garage told me that some fuel cleaner might do the trick, and costs only £20 a bottle. He said the sensor in the flap might just be grubbby and pinging the light on. I'm totally ignorant one way or the other, but £20 is better than £310.

In general there's no real fault with the car. No loss of power, everything seems to work. Only thing I've seen is that on my last full tank I lost maybe 60 miles. I always reset my trip to see what a full tank is giving me for occasions just like this. So other than a bit of lost fuel economy, it runs fine.

Can anyone offer advice on this? For the sake of £20 I might do it anyway if there's a chance of it saving me about £300.

Looks like the motorised flap in the inlet, seems a possible easy home fix to save on some labor? It does state cleaning won't do much if that is the particular problem.

Sounds like wishful thinking to me.

How is an in-fuel additive going to clean something that's not touched by the fuel as it's further back than the injectors?

(the recycled exhaust fumes hardly count)

Right, I've had this sorted now and in the interest of people finding this thread through Google, I'm gonna explain what happened...

My engine management light came on. Car was seemingly fine though. Took it to a garage and had the faults read. It came back with codes 012547 (manifold flap) and 001681 (cooling fan assembly). Garage originally quoted me for £310 for the flap (not sold by Euro, had to be genuine) and £210 for the fan assembly (from Euro) (both +VAT). Total including labour came to £750. I left it at that.

I spent the weekend researching and asking questions (see above). One garage (rhymes with kwik tit) told me that a fuel cleaner could fix the problem. I was almost willing to spend £20 on that before someone told me otherwise (thanks Jimmy). Another forum post put me onto an Audi forum (thanks again Jimmy, that thread was golden) where someone was having an identical problem. A lot of people chipped in saying it was right and very common, so I went the same route, which is as follows...

Get a throttle body from Euro (£140 +VAT). This part includes the manifold flap. Either swap this out yourself or if you're like me pay a garage £50 to do it. When this part faults it blows fuse F24 under the bonnet. Fuse F24 feeds the manifold flap and fan assembly. That explains error 001681. After swapping the throttle body make sure to replace fuse F24 (standard 10A). After a few turns of the ignition the engine management light will go off.

Job done. Originally I had a £750 invoice to pay. After a weekend of heavy reading it was actually only £217.50 and a very embarrassed mechanic.

So, between yesterday (when you asked), and today (when you have the solution), you had a weekend to research, source and fit a replacement?

That time machine must come in handy.

I gave the car to the garage on the 29th which is when I got the £750 quote. I was working all week which left me the weekend of 3rd/4th to figure something out. As a last ditch I asked on here on the Monday.

Early on the 6th I was able to confirm the faulty part thanks to the thread Jimmy linked. I phoned Euro and sourced it from them as they had one on the shelf. I phoned my garage, explained the situation and they booked me in that day.

So, yes, nearly all the real progress was made on Tuesday morning but that doesn't change the fact that I researched a lot over the weekend.

Now are you done being pedantic about time frames?

Thanks for this post, I'm going through the same issue right now and garage is quoting me NZD 950 (approx £400). Do you still have the part number for the throttle body? I'll see if Euro will send it all the way to New Zealand

interesting - read many threads on google where people used oven cleaner to clear gunk from inlet.
