Afternoon chaps. I am wondering if I may ask for your experiences with Mk5 GTIs.

Mine is an 06, coming up to 100k and When it gets warm through there is a slight knock/tappy noise. I am aware that the cam chain and tensioner loosen up a little over the life of the engine and this can cause the noise as described about but I have also heard it can be the injectors that can be heard..

Which is it? It is service time, I am looking to get a big service done including belts, tensioners and the water pump (and a clutch too for peace of mind) so I am trying to find a definitive answer regarding this potential cam chain/tensioner issue. Obviously, I would prefer to get everything done at the same time to save a couple of quid on labour and also prevent my car from having to be dissembled more than once.

Does anybody have any experiences regarding this?

All input greatly appreciated.

I thought all MK5 GTIs used the EA113 engine which uses a cambelt.

The top is a belt but the very bottom is a chain, from what I have read.

I am happy to be shown to be wrong though smile

When was the cam belt last changed? 40k is the interval.

When mine was going it made more of a squeaking sound. There is a video of it on YouTube somewhere.

I've just checked the book and the belt isn't due for two years and the water pump was done at the same time in 05/2012.

I feel like a bit of a bell end for missing this information but I'm also chuffed that I don't need to get it done at the moment biggrin

Potentially daft question here, would they still be able to change the chain and tensioner from the bottom end without taking the belt off too?

Also, does anybody have a rough idea of the cost of a clutch change?

I'd get your garage to check it out regardless. I had to change mine on my MK5 GTI at 30k, so a lot earlier than scheduled.

I shall. I'm half tempted to just change the belt, chain and tensioners just for peace of mind. It would probably be for the best if I decided I fancy a remap in the future.

What engine is it? Normally only the AXX gives chain problems and the BWA tends to be fine.

Cambelt needs to be done now if it hasn't been done yet

They are very tappy by nature and my 06 sounded a bit rough at idle with 100k miles on the clock. I just lived with it as sounded good on the move and drove well.

How would I find out the engine code? I shall have a squint.

Belt was done in May 2012.

White sticker under the boot liner is probably the easiest place to find it.

I've grabbed the service manual, it's a BWA.

What element of the EA113 is chain driven? Only thing I can think of is the oil pump?

They tend to be a bit rattly at idle. Mine certainly is, as is every other EA113 TFSI I've ever looked at.

Its a twin cam engine with only one cam pulley.

The cams are linked at the rear of the head with a small secondary chain, the oil pump chain does so little work its not every going to be a noise.

If the noise is from the rear of the head, check the cam follower for the HP pump.

Thanks. I shall get it good and warm on the way home from work, check it out when I get there and report back in a bit with where the noise is coming from.

Cheers!

Has anyone got a link to the tfsi pdf that the above image was taken from for the EA113.
I'm trying to find the technical info but only seem to be able to find a 1.8 or EA888 version.
Cheers
