2010 Golf 1.4 TSI reliability
Discussion
My mum has seen a 2010 Golf 1.4 Tsi SE for sale at around £7500 with 40k miles. Is there anything to look out for in terms of issues with these cars? She's got a mk4 1.6 which is getting on a bit,but I'd rather she didn't plump for something that's going to throw up too many bills. Anyone got experience of problems with these cars?
Sounds like a good price, and that engine suits the Golf well as a daily driver.
Timing chains have been problematic on the 1.4 TSI but been a 2010 you might be Ok. Listen out for any sharp sounding rattles at startup - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6L3fF49OT8

Thanks. Seems the internet has a few horror stories about cam chains and turbochargers on these. If she likes it I'll be looking to get it put on a warranty somehow, maybe aftermarket (Warranty Wise) or VW if possible.
I think it's got a FVWSH apart from the last service - would that preclude us from buying a VW warranty?

Last time I took out an extended VW warranty they'd accept cars like yours on the condition any services in future are done by a main dealer. So whilst it's under the new extended warranty you'll need to take to VW for servicing. It's a good idea having it and could save thousands in repair costs should you have any problems.
Surely the thing to do is look to see if this car or it's derivatives feature in reliability studies , like JD Power , Warranty Direct , What Car etc , where you can then see how they fare against their contemporaries for reliability and repair costs on average as result of looking at a slightly bigger survey sample of the few here!
Wish I had done that
