I put a post up on here a little while ago about a few issues with my partners A3, but now I've got more serious problems. Gave the car a service the other weekend - fuel, oil and air filters, oil change, plugs etc. Also fitted a new thermostat, cambelt and water pump.

The car is a 1.6 A3 petrol, 8L chassis, AKL engine code.

Whilst doing this I found a broken breather from the oil cap to the inlet, just before the throttle body, which I've repaired. It's always used a bit of oil but not a particularly concerning amount, however now it needs topping up around the 150 mile mark, there's also a strong air sucking sound from around the oil filler cap. I un-did my repair, letting the oil breather vent back into the engine bay and oil usage has improved but it's still much worse than before.

I'm hoping that there's another breather which takes air into the crankcase somewhere else which has become blocked, causing the crankcase ventilation system to suck oil up from the sump, I believe the 1.8T suffers from this but I can't confirm it either way for the 1.6 petrol.

What other issues can cause a lot of oil to come out of the top breather? It does give off a touch of white smoke at high revs, but clears up quickly. If it was piston rings surely it would burn the oil giving off blue smoke?

oh, I have checked for leaks!
