Will I just need to change the back boxes? I fear that honorific drone noise that you get from bad set-ups..
Been there. A back box won`t change much. Do some research matey looking at full systems and buy the right thing.

Tyres? Uniroyal Rainsport 3's XL's in appropriate load/speed variety.

Have them on my own q [225-40-18] and have ran them through winter with no complaints at all.

Online buy best to shop around.... wink

Have noticed a slight problem since I've had the car... If the car is warm, and I stop for 15-30minutes to grab some shopping etc, when I go to start it up it takes to attempts. It will often fire up and die on the first turn of the key. Second time it always fires up straight away. Any ideas?

Yes, the engine is wonderful. It is never going to be the quickest, but the immediate power, smooth delivery and progress acceleration is perfect for my driving style - and short journeys.

Any photos?
Just the one photo at the moment. No idea on the starting issue I'm afraid, though.

^ Looks great! I'm amazed they build this model/engine in non Quattro format. I'm sure that will be interesting in the wet!

Well the car was in the garage to get a few things sorted this week, parking sensors, faulty cigarette lighter and a rattle in the door. All now sorted, although they couldnt find any issues or faults regarding the intermittent warm start issue. Naturally, they couldn't recreate the problem either!

I did enquire about a gearbox oil change too, and they quoted me over £400! When is the recommended interval to do this? Car has currently covered 66,000 miles.

Sounds about right for a box oil change.

There's no right time to change it. Some recommend 70k, some say if it's working then just leave it. I had a fund to repair mine if it ever went.

It’s actually not too bad in that respect. The power delivery is quite progressive so there isn’t any drama in wet conditions, or in the snow we had earlier in the week, although the front Uniroyal Rainsports are brand new so that probably helps.

The service intervals for auto boxes is highlighted in the service booklet. I know the Multitronic is every 40k but I can’t remember if the Tiptronic is the same. £400 is very high though as I just had mine done for £197 at a local Audi specialist and Audi have fixed prices on their website. £170 for both auto boxes.

Tiptronics are sealed for life* according to Audi.

  • warranty period.

The GBox manufacturer ZF recommend a change every 60-80k depending on usage despite what Audi says. Oil is expensive at £30.00 per litre x5 = £150.00. An indy or specialist will charge £140.00 around 2 hours to change properly ie correct heat cycle (this is important) so all in around £270.00. If its a keeper its probably worth doing than a GB repair costing potentially 000's IMO or chance it....

Quite agree.

I asked MINI about the auto box in our 4 year old Cooper S. Guess what.....Sealed for life!

Thanks guys, I agree with the above, it certainly makes sense to change the gearbox oil, rather than the gearbox internals!

I've just called Poole Audi and they 'know' nothing of a fixed price for the Tiptronic box. And, have quoted me £523 to change the gearbox oil, filter and sump plug (inc 8lt of oil). Ouch!

Audi will be useless at this type of thing anyway - they usually farm it off to a specialist anyway and put a mark up on the final bill.

Take it to a recommended gear box specialist - if you are Midlands based I can recommend one - they will deal with these all day & understand the correct heat up processes to do it properly and charge you a reasonable price.

I'd love a breakdown on the figure they quoted you .....

Yeah that's a crazy amount of money. Aberdeen Audi were aware of the fixed price servicing menu when I enquired about it and I was planning to use them before I remembered about a VW/Audi specialist just down the road from my work who confirmed they could also do the work. By the way, I have the dreaded Multitronic box in my car, not Tiptronic, but I believe the oil change procedure is very similar.

I had a similar warm-start issue on a previous Mercedes and it turned out to be the prelude to the Crank Position Sensor failing.

When it finally conked out in traffic I had to push it to the side of the road and wait for it to cool down before it would restart and get me the final few miles home.

Cheers,

Phil

Whatever the warm-start issue was, it has stopped now... Perhaps the car just needed some regular use!

All other bits fixed too, just a Parrot visor kit to buy as I can't bring myself to part with just shy of £500 to have BT fitted. Still loving the car, and it is certainly everything (and more) I had hoped it would be. I've also pulled the trigger on some Conti Sports that came up very cheap, so I'll be having them fitted next week.

Lovely looking car, doesn't look 10 years old at all.

There's quite a lot of info about the tiptronic box on vw audi forum...

http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/archive/index.p...

I am looking to have the fluid replaced in my gearbox around my next service time, so around 77k. There is an auto gearbox specialist near me who quotes around £280 on their website for the oil change on the ZF gearbox.

Also interested in what tyres people go for on this car - I'm doing around 35 - 40k so want something that lasts well when I swap next. I currently have the OEM fit Pirelli P Zero Rosso's on mine, 255/35/19.

Hoddo – no problem I don’t mind sharing. I paid £5K back in February and it was a private sale. Since then I’ve spent just over £500 on it (gear box oil change, engine oil change switching from long life to yearly servicing, new battery and 2 x front tyres), but that should hopefully be it now until the next MOT in December.
