Keen to take a look at one of these as a replacement for my R32, anyone know when they're being launched in the UK? My local dealer says end this year/early next, another I called said it may not even be offered in the UK!

VW UK .... don't know and no one available from their sales team to take a call.

anyone got some inside info?

I spent the weekend being given useless information from various dealers! I'm keen on the golf r estate, the merc c450 amg and the new audi rs3 sport back, so traipsed round the local dealers at the weekend.
VW printed me the LA press release from last year and said it should be available to order in Spring. I asked what that might mean and they just shrugged.
Merc were even more useless, just told me I could give them £1000 and they'd order the car for me but if I changed my mind I wouldn't need to proceed - couldn't give me any dates as to when it might actually be released though.
Audi were the most useful in that at least they knew the RS3 was imminent, but still can't tell me when I might actually be able to configure a car etc. I have a small deposit down just to make sure I'm in line for ordering, but still very keen to learn more about the golf as it could be the pick of the bunch for my needs. That 5cyl warble on the audi is just preventing me from thinking logically though!

interesting its not just VW then! Don't understand how car companies of this size who must spend 100's of millions on global marketing can't get their act together on something so basic. Launch a car at a major show, announce its available in spring 2015 then don't communicate a launch strategy to their markets. Guaranteed to frustrate possible customers.

saw the estate R at Geneva, ''Golf R Variant'' it was named.

was stunning.. those quad pipes suit the bigger body of an estate so much better.

Personally wouldn't leave my R32 after spending the weekend with the hathback R as a little swapsie with my cousin. never the less it is eye wateringly quick, the noise just got on my nerves a bit towards the end!

Received a call from my local dealer today to say that the R estate is now available to order. Have a test drive on a ln R hatch tomorrow. Going to be very interesting to see what the figures look like on finance package as also looking at an RS3 or as a super barge, an a6 biturbo. Both of these come in at sub £500 a month over 48 months with a 6k deposit on PCP but if the golf comes in sub £400 with the same deposit, I'll be very tempted.

GFV is silly low after a few years. If you configure one on the VW site you can proceed to the finance calculator.

I'm pretty convinced those figures are wrong. No way the hatch can be 50% more than the estate after 48 months.

Had a decent test drive in a 5dr dsg hatch this morning and am now torn between placing an order for the R estate or going with an S4 Avant. Really enjoyed the golf but the interior just feels a bit low rent even when compared to what is effectively an 8 year old audi interior. Was really impressed with how it goes though, it felt very much as I was hoping it would. Not enormously exciting but quick, sure footed and compliant.

Have you driven an S4? Would be intresting to hear your views on how they compare.

The International press launch is based in and around Malaga later this week, with a driving session on the Ascari circuit :-)

VW UK has published prices: Golf Estate R 2.0 TSI BMT 300 PS 4Motion 6-speed auto DSG £33,585

Thanks for the update, I had a good go on the VW configurator last night - with leather and paint it comes out at £35.5k, I can live without all the other stuff. You can also compare it vs rival models from all other brands. I had a look vs S4, Merc 400C class, BMW 335d, the Golf really does hold its own in this company, especially given the lower cost & likely monthly leasing. Crucially for me the boot is much bigger at 600 odd litres. Will be interested to see the road tests over the coming weeks...seriously tempted as a replacement to our R32 which is getting too small for carting all the family stuff around.

As much as I am interested in the comparison of an Audi, Merc, BMW to the Golf R, these are surely not direct competitors? A competitor would be something like the Focus ST estate wouldn't it?

Because of the deals available on the others, they are similar prices. The golf r is about 30% more than an st3 with leather/nav etc. Doesn't mean it's any better of course!

I agree the prices are similar, but VW isn't a premium brand? It's categorised in the same group as ford, Vauxhall (I cringe at that one!), Renault, Toyota etc. Then you have the premium group, Audi, BMW, Lexus, Merc etc. Not trying to be a badge snob but at £35k+ for a golf estate is bonkers no matter how good it is.

Presumably VW have priced it at a level they think will sell the most with sufficient margin. It's about £5k more than the Leon Cupra ST which is probably it's closest rival. I'd say the golf is worth an extra £2k for the four wheel drive and an extra 2k for better plastics and residuals, so probably priced about right.

As to where VW fit in brand hierarchy, I'd say a step above Ford\Vauxhall/mazda etc (where seat and skoda sit for VAG) but not as high as bmw, Audi Mercedes. Similar area to Volvo.

Yeah, I agree personally, and not just because I drive a VW. I think they occupy a middle ground between the likes of Ford and Renault, and the higher tier of BMW and Mercedes.
