As much as I am interested in the comparison of an Audi, Merc, BMW to the Golf R, these are surely not direct competitors? A competitor would be something like the Focus ST estate wouldn't it?
I guess for me they are! The RS just isn't on my radar....dont like the looks & Ford image or rather my wife doesn't & she's the one going to be driving it most of the time. For me the R is a cut price S4 , yes the S4 avant is marginally bigger inside but performance-wise/MPG there isn't much in it. Whether you like VW or not, an R estate is a pretty compelling family car for a 45 yr old me...understated (yeah the 4 exhausts are horrible), fast, big boot, rails for a roofbox, good standard equipment & hopefully good lease deals. also its not a Q5, Toureg, Macan etc etc...

Can't argue at that George, I have to say I passed a R hatchback in blue yesterday and it looked fantastic can only hope the estate looks as good. It will be very interesting to see a direct comparison between both the S4 and R. As an S4 owner (wife's car) it's a lovely beast but lacks "soul".

Been having a look at it on the VW configurator, and it's a very appealing car, looks great in Lapiz Blue, but I'll have to revise my previous comment and say I actually think it is overpriced. £6,500 more than the Leon once equipped with DCC and sat nav which the Leon has as standard, for softer plastics and four wheel drive...

Then, it's only £3k less than an Audi S4 avant through drive the deal, I know its been around for a while but still, that makes it look expensive.

I assume it's not on Drive the Deal yet though...

It is, I was comparing like for like. Base Golf R estate is £29,180, discount of just over £4k.

Crikey, S4 discounts must be huge. I wonder which is actually the better car though...

Pretty good review here. Pretty tempted to pull the trigger on one of these.

Found an awesome lease deal for the Golf R Estate on Target Leasing.

I've been looking at a Golf R for ages now, but seeing the estate, I think I might go for that.

I have a young family and thought the 5DR hatch would be fine, but I love the idea of a practical mini- RS6!!

Starts at £182.55

Copied from my post in the leasing thread -

Had a chat with Kelly at G2L about their Golf R Estate deal and got an official quote, as follows:

Golf R Estate, plus metallic paint, list price £34125
24 month contract
3+23 payment schedule
Deposit of £832.56 followed by 23 payments of £277.52
Annual mileage of 5000, with excess charged at 6.28ppm (incl VAT)
Administration fee is £180.00

They're thinking delivery could be end of November.

I've decided to go with a 12 month old 330d Touring. There's a huge amount out for around £30-33k with a great spec...p/x my R32 and borrow at 3.2% from the bank is a no brainer for a couple of years. yes its diesel (my first) but the MPG will be a revelation after the R32 and it'll be hauling the family around every day. Most used ones at that price have leather, BMW professional satnav, karmon harden stereo, xenons etc. etc

Also....no VW dealer seems to have a clue when they'll have an R estate demo in.

I also think the latest 3 series estate is a better looking car than the R estate , if the proportions of the regular Golf estate I've seen are anything to go by.

Make sure you look at new ones. I got a quote for 35k from Carwow recently for a 335i m sport. Sure a new 330d would be less!
