I've done a quick google, but wondered if anyone had recent experiences.
2 new front tyres fitted, then a full wheel alignment done. Approx 200 miles later, Dynamic steering fault flashes up followed by ESP fault and Brake Guard not available. Steering wheel is now approx 1/8 turn out when driving in a straight line.
Seems I have to go to Audi and have wheel angle sensor reset??
Car is in New Zealand, so can't take to any UK Indies wink

Any thoughts?

They probably didn't brace the wheel straight when setting the alignment, get this corrected before having the steering wheel angle sensor calibrated

For what it's worth if anything like my S8, I jacked up the front of my car whilst doing engine work, front wheels off wing liners out front bumper off ETC, and when everything was back together I got the same faults, due apparently to not putting the car into Jacking mode before I started, a common mistake by us DIY'ers. Find someone that can remove the fault codes Ross-tech vag com etc then get the alignment done properly. One of the best systems here in the uk are what the best body shops use called Hawk.

Thanks guys, still not solved yet. Took car to local VW dealer (Audi service agent), they plugged in and tried to do a reset on steering, but because steering wheel is now off centre their computer won't let them reset the steering angle sensor. So took car to wheel aligners to double check, but all still within spec, nothing loose.
Car back at the VW garage now.
Further googling found one guy have a dynamic steering module on an RS5 fail and throw up same codes and offset the steering wheel!!!
We shall see.

The only way your steering wheel can be off centre is if they ballsed up the mechanical alignment job. They will now need to centre the rack to confirm it's in the right position and then reset all the toe and camber/caster settings. A proper 4 wheel alignment takes about 2 hours - it was probably fine before they offered it at tyre fitting, then they'll have knocked it out.

A main dealer should be competent to set it up properly. The fact the wheel is offset but the car appears to be driving in a straight-ish line will be confusing the electronics as it expects steering wheel off straight ahead = turning, so the ABS rings should be rotating at different rates.

Fix the mechanical alignment issue and your electrical issues should disappear.

Fixed by doing a 'Basic Setting" of the Dynamic Steering system.
Wheel alignment was fine, just wasn't done when connected to a computer system with VAGcom or similar.
No one seems to believe me that when the Fault flashed up when manoeuvring in a car park the steering wheel "moved itself" to be offset by approx 1/8 of a turn....Have only found 1 other believer on t internet with a steering fault on an RS5 smile

This is the full sequence for doing the alignment check:

Sequence of operations for checking and adjusting wheel alignment

Note

t The vehicle must always be in unladen condition when measuring wheel alignment → Chapter.

t Check which running gear version is fitted in vehicle. This information is listed on the vehicle data sticker → Chapter

Always keep to the following sequence of operations.

1 - Drive vehicle onto wheel alignment unit and ensure that suspension is not under stress, if necessary by moving vehicle backwards and forwards several times.

2 - Before starting the initial measurement and before making any adjustments, make sure that the steering is returned correctly to the centre position by turning the steering wheel uniformly in both directions using the steering wheel balance -VAS 6458-.

3 - Check centre position of steering rack → Chapter.

4 - Carry out wheel rim runout compensation → Chapter.

5 - Check full steering lock → Chapter.

6 - Check camber at front wheels and centralise if necessary → Chapter.

7 - Check camber at rear wheels and adjust if necessary → Chapter.

8 - Check toe setting at rear wheels and adjust if necessary → Chapter.

9 - Check toe setting at front wheels and adjust if necessary → Chapter.

10 - If settings have been altered at the front wheels, perform calibration of dynamic steering → Chapter → Vehicle diagnostic tester.

11 - If suspension settings have been changed, perform zero compensation of steering angle sender -G85- → Vehicle diagnostic tester.

12 - If settings have been altered at the rear wheels, perform calibration of dynamic steering → Chapter → Vehicle diagnostic tester.

13 - If rear axle settings have been altered, ACC adjustment → Chapter and/or calibration of the lane departure warning function → Chapter must be performed.

Calibration of dynamic steering:

Basic setting for dynamic steering

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t Vehicle diagnostic tester

t Steering wheel balance -VAS 6458-

t Wheel alignment computer

Please note preparations required before calibration/adjustment of driver assist systems → Chapter.

There are two options for performing the basic setting on the dynamic steering system:

“Quick-start”

This procedure should be selected if:

t The active steering control unit -J792- has been renewed.

t The steering angle sender -G85- has been calibrated.

t The steering column has been renewed.

t The steering wheel is not straight when driving in a straight line.

“Full wheel alignment”

This procedure should be selected if:

t The suspension geometry has been adjusted when checking wheel alignment.

t The front axle toe setting has been changed.

t The rear axle toe setting has been changed.

t The running gear of the vehicle has been modified in any way – e.g. conversion from standard running gear to sports running gear.
W00-10694

Note

t The two procedures are programmed on the wheel alignment computer.

t Each procedure runs automatically.

t All you have to do is select the relevant program.

“Quick-start” procedure: “Full wheel alignment” procedure:
Drive vehicle onto test platform Drive vehicle onto test platform
Activate measuring system Activate measuring system
Select model Select model
Carry out wheel rim runout compensation → Chapter. Carry out wheel rim runout compensation → Chapter.
Wheel alignment computer indicates “Front wheels straight-ahead” Perform initial wheel alignment → Chapter
Connect up diagnostic tester Align wheels
Select “Function/component selection” → Anchor. Perform final wheel alignment
Answer prompt: “Dynamic steering fitted?”
Wheel alignment computer indicates “Front wheels straight-ahead”
Connect up diagnostic tester
Select “Function/component selection” → Anchor.

Note

t Before starting basic setting procedure, the steering angle sender -G85- must be calibrated with the steering wheel balance -VAS 6458-.

t Before starting basic setting procedure, interrogate event memory and rectify any faults.

– Connect battery charger →Rep. gr.27.

– Connect up diagnostic tester.

– Select calibration procedure for dynamic steering system on wheel alignment computer.

– Attach quick-release clamps to all four wheels.

– Attach wheel alignment sensors to front and rear wheels.

– Carry out wheel rim runout compensation → Chapter.

– Set front wheels to straight-ahead position when instructed to do so by wheel alignment computer.

Note

t Disregard the steering wheel position!

t Only the display on the wheel alignment computer applies!

The remaining steps are now performed via the diagnostic tester.

– Switch on ignition.

– Touch the Guided Fault Finding button on the display screen.

– Select the following:

t Make

t Type

t Model year

t Version

t Engine code letters

– Confirm the entered information.

Wait until diagnostic tester has interrogated all control units in the vehicle.

– Press the Go to button and select the option “Function/component selection”.

– Select the relevant program in “Guided Functions”.

Then follow basic setting instructions on screen.

Wow, thanks for the info.
Shame I'm a 5 hour drive away from a proper Audi/Indie garage. The place I had the wheel alignment done is considered the best local place for Euro cars, but when they plugged my car in the list of Audis stopped at 2004!!

400+ miles over the weekend and all seems fine now anyway.

Cheers, Alex
