I'd want a replacement car personally, but doubt it will happen. Replacing the engine will make lots of marks on the paint in the engine compartment and to have such major surgery at such a young age would leave dilute my enthusiasm for it a bit.
Agree with this. If was on a lease or PCP and I didn't intend to keep it then I don't think I'd be so bothered, but otherwise I'd want it replaced.

Seems a bit random these days - some people get cars replaced easily, others have a massive battle.

This. I'd say you have adequate grounds for rejecting the car if they tell you they won't replace it.

After 1 week my car broke down.... It needed a new ecu / heater matrix and clutch release bearing... It's a lease car but I got £500 of John Lewis vouchers.

+1 reject it. Wont be the same and what else is wrong with it - too many horror stories about this model out there take it as a lucky escape and go for something else.

I love my R, but I am glad its not mine and I'm hand it back in 12 months time.

The DSG has started doing odd things, it occasionally goes to change up from 2nd to 3rd and seems to "miss" the gear, resulting in a huge surce forward as it drops back into 2nd.

Iv loved the 10k iv done it it so far but i cant help think something is going to go horribly wrong before I give it back

Sorry to hi-jack your thread!

Car went in on 01/04/2015 (they must have thought it was an April fool - sadly not). Got the car back on the 10/04/2015 so a 10 day turn-around (with a 4 day Easter break) wasn't too bad... Been told there will be no like-for-like replacement nor can I request my money back... VW gave me £300 worth of VW merchandise as a good-will gesture and on top of that I have a product complaint lodged with VW Customer Services which i'm still awaiting the outcome.

I've put over 1300 miles on the new engine already and it's been a dream to drive but now this has still left a nasty taste in my mouth and i'm subsequently thinking about putting it up for sale...

Another person on here had his engine go the other day. He's posted in the PH fleet Golf R thread. His lasted 1400 miles.

Fair enough you are likely to have some issues with cars, but I've now read of numerous complete engine failures already. The record doesn't read very good.

What is your complaint to VW? Is there much else they can do but change the engine?

I'd have pushed them on this. At the very least you should have spoken to Citizens Advice, who can start a complain with Trading Standards on your behalf.

Are you 100% sure that you have a new engine fitted or did they repair the original one.

A used Golf R with a replacement engine is gonna kill you with depreciation, keep it, enjoy it and let the bad memories fade away.

I've not seen that "If only everything was as reliable as a VW" advert recently.

A friend of mine works for the RAC and had 4 Golf R engine failures in a week. I nearly bought one a few weeks ago, ended up with an S4 instead.

Makes me worried about my S3 with the same EA888 engine.

Had the Air con compressor go after only 2000 miles which had to be replaced frown, I was going to remap it, now I'm thinking maybe not.
