This isn't good, bought a brand new MK7 Golf R from VW (personally) nearly 2 weeks ago, put 897 miles on it, had it due in for a 1000 pre-check and the thing broke down today with a very loud engine rattle, complete loss of power and an orange EPC warnign light on the dash...

Got picked up by VW Assistance and just waiting the outcome...

(Gutted because i've never bought a brand new car before and this was a real treat) great car otherwise and VW customer service so far has been good. I wonder if mine is the first MK7 Golf R to fail? Let's see what happens...

Unlucky. I hope it's sorted quickly.

...and they don't give you a diesel Polo as a courtesy car!

I hope this isn't another one which has been remapped and gone BOOM despite being apparently new.

There's a thread somewhere.

Does anyone know what the outcome of that "situation" was?

It definitely isn't. Head over to vwroc.com and read about the turbo failures...

I suspect the poster ended up with a £10k bill for a new motor.

Far from it.

Early cars had issues with the turbo and failed within a few hundred miles.
Looking around several have had DSG failure already
Last time I looked at VWROC there was a bloke posting from the side of the road with a serious misfire and fuel spewing out the exhaust...

Still, its a golf eh ?

Hope you get yours fixed soon.

Initial diagnostic after they dismantled the engine bottom end is metal fragments (filings) detected so looks like something hasn't been lubricated properly... Hoping for a new engine replacement under warranty.

Wouldn't have a clue if it was remapped prior to coming to me...

I was told to drive it conservatively for the first 1000 miles by keeping under 4000rpm and under 80mph... Which I stuck to religiously... I even followed a warm-up procedure having also currently owning a TVR T350C (2006) model and that engine has never failed...

What does this procedure consist of?

I warm my car up by booting it up the hill out of the village then it soon warms up when I get on the motorway a few hundred yards later!

You don't 'drive it like you stole it' until the oil hits 70 degrees

Wait for the oil temperature to get to at least 70 degrees C before going full throttle... Rule of thumb with the Speed 6 was when the oil is below 30 degrees C then you keep the revs below 3000rpm, < 40 degrees C = < 4000rpm etc etc...

Correct, bought brand new and owned for 12 days before the engine gave up... So no remap during my ownership...

I'd want a replacement car personally, but doubt it will happen. Replacing the engine will make lots of marks on the paint in the engine compartment and to have such major surgery at such a young age would leave dilute my enthusiasm for it a bit.

Bloody frustrating in the winter when its cold, I fitted an oil preheater to mine so I could enjoy the car at some point within the first 30 miles smile

Don't know about VW turbo engines , but not only should you warm it up fully before opening the tin of beans , but you need to warm it down at the end of a drive ?

Just drive off boost for the last couple of miles of your journey. If you've just been on track it'd probably be a good idea to let it idle for a bit, but for normal driving you don't need to worry too much.

I've never done anything specific regarding warming down. It's obvious that you should wait until at least th water is up to temp before ragging it. Mines fine on 86k... Uses no oil... And now I've said that it's bound to blow up on the way home.
