Air con pump making nasty noises

Hi all new on hear I have a bit of a prob with my ml 4 golf gttdi air con pump has broken down the clutch has gone and it's making hell of a noise is there any way I can remove it and put smaller belt on or do I have to replace the air con pump ?

It should just freewheel if you leave the A/C switched off and not be a concern. Depending on the type of A/C pump, you can get clutch rebuild kits which you can look into before splashing out on a new / recon pump.

I wouldn't remove it completely as it will affect resale value and the climatronic system is all tied into it etc.
