Argh, got let down again for this weekend. Had a test drive booked for tomorrow, but they just phoned to cancel.
After the above 2nd cancel, I booked again for the third time, for this weekend. Just got a call to cancel this weekend's test drive. 3 bookings, 3 cancellations. I've made a fourth booking for the weekend after next...

I suspect they are cancelling you because they have a diary full of 20 minute test drives, all weekend, every weekend... with people placing orders afterwards.

Will it really take a weekend test drive for you to decide?

In that case, it should be very easy to make a specific set of advance bookings, and not have to cancel days in advance. In reality, the reasons have varied, 'car never existed', 'car got taken away', 'car got sold'.

I cant test drive during the week, hence weekends are only availability. Actually the wife is the main reason for the test drive. She thinks she 'needs' a 4x4, so we need to drive it to show her that range rovers arent the only way.

I dont begrudge the reasons per se, but its still annoying. I need to know either way whether the RS6 will work for us, as if not I need to put down an order for an RRS asap, due to the long wait list.

Are you suggesting that I should just buy it without a test-drive?

sounds like yes, Audi expect you to part with 80k plus without test driving it first....maybe that's why there are quite a few for sale with lowish mileage's and quite new, people just have to buy them to test drive them and then don't like them! Strange way of selling such cars, not allowing anyone to drive them....

My first test drive in an RS6 was 2 miles up the A5 then 2 miles back the other way, after which the salesman expected me to place an order. It's just the way things are these days, my guess is that the trade think that most of us have decided on the car before we walk into the showroom and that driving it has little to no bearing on our buying decision and I reckon that in many instances this is tragically the case. I did eventually get one for 24 hours and decided it was too much of a barge for me as I didn't really need all that space, I went for an RS4 and have no regrets, but I still like the 6.

I haven't test driven a car for 10 years. I'd just buy it. Maybe not ideal but enough youtube, review etc info out there. Cars include 6 audi from a3 to rs4. M3 x 2. 7 series, amg s class

I'm the same. If I needed a test drive to convince me, then I was probably looking at the wrong car for me. The exception would be a car that doesn't live up to the hype when driven but no RS is going to do that.

In Kryten's case, I just cannot see an RS6 test drive convincing your wife that she no longer wants a RRS. Mine wants a X5. Getting my new BiTDi has only convinced her that we need a new X5, not a two or three year old one. Girls aren't hardwired the same way as us. She really won't care it does 0-62 in 3.9secs.

I'd disagree. A long test drive will allow you to try loads of things that you're going to do in the car.
For example, I had an RS4 for a week from Audi, and I used it everyday as I would, and it all fitted well with my life, my wife liked it, I could get my bikes in the back, so I bought it.

However, some months later, I was dead set on getting an RS6, but when I had that for a week, I was very impressed with it, but it was just too big for my everyday life, so I replaced my RS4 with another RS4, which I still have

I've found Audi very good at lending cars for extended periods of time, and getting to truly live with the car will give you a far better impression than watching someone like Chris Harris moan about how it understeers on the track, or pottering around a pre defined 20minute test route with a salesperson sat beside you boring the pants off you with his sales spiel about a car he probably knows very little about in terms of technical details

Saying that, now the RS4 has been discontinued, I'm really only left with an RS6 to replace my current car with, so that'll be where my money goes, and I'll just have to think more carefully about where I park it when I'm out and about smile

To add to that, if I had a dealer cancel test drives on me more than once, I'd just go somewhere else without hesitation. That's very poor form on their behalf

Persist and get a test drive. RS6 isn't for everyone. But if you are looking for something that combines Bentley GT type cabin and wafting with a hilarious sound track, effortless power, 4WD security (I found the AMG too hairy in anything but bone dry conditions) and a cavernous boot for dogs etc look no further.
Range Rovers and X5s are nice cars but the RS6 makes you feel very special. And surprisingly economical too - just back from a 200 mile round trip, mostly motorway, but plenty of A and B roads too, and averaged 27.4! And no, I wasn't pootling. My diesel 530 F11 BMW struggled to do more than late thirties on same route and difference is nowhere near as much as I thought.

Downside: I have never driven a car that attracts so much attention. All good so far though. And if you have a sports exhaust - a must - turn it off in town otherwise you sound like a plonker wink

Turns out they're rented me one for next weekend from a hire car company! How amusing that the only way a manufacturer can supply a car is from a hire company. smile

It maybe they have hired it from Audi,
Strange as it may seem, Audi charge dealers around £300 to hire a RS model for demos, covers the transport costs to the dealer,
As for test drives being cancelled, unfortunately it happens, could be for many differant reasons. car could have been sold, dinged, another dealers has borrowed it and not got it back on time.

My previous car was bought from a dealer at the far end of the country, sight unseen. But I'd at least gone and had a good look around one locally before hand, to make sure I'd actually 'fit'.

I test drove an RS6 back to back against a biturbo diesel. both test drives were on the same day and of around 30 mins each.On the basis of the test drive, I ordered a biturbo diesel as I couldn't see what the extra £40K for the RS was going to give me. I had my biturbo, drove it for 10K miles and its was a great car, if a little ordinary. the RS itch was itching away so I just bought one, lost a small fortune on the biturbo and I haven't regretted the decision once. The RS just has more to give and the more you drive it, the more you learn it the more you can exploit its' many talents. I know it's not to everybodies taste, but that's why there are different manufactures I guess.

Interesting post RGambo. I doubt I will be able to resist the RS6 when I get bored with my BiTDi.

smile to give you an small idea, the RS in normal comfort setting is like the BiTDI in sport. and the jump from comfort to sport in the RS is bigger than the jump from comfort to sport in the BiTDI.

I'm not sure I'd be parking a Biturbo up and looking at it fondly through the window, but the RS6 is a lovely looking car
There's always a strong argument about diminishing driving experiences between high powered diesels and sports cars, but they're chalk and cheese when it comes to looks and noise

A RS6 is never the sensible choice, but it depends how you value something special. After 3 diesel BMWs (fast and great) the RS6 is in a whole different league. Worth every bit extra. IMO.

I think i'll be waiting for more RS6's to come on the used market, i think maybe they might be around 45k for a good one in a couple of years, saw a Sepang blue RS6 and it looked incredible, or Nardo grey?

I've had a C6 RS6 for almost a year. It's good to hear some positive owner experiences for the C7. Probably I'll wait a year or two till my warranty is expiring and then upgrade. The towbar will come in useful for towing the motorbike.
