All this talk on various forums about them making good get away cars. Get away from what? People don't do bank jobs using a shotgun and a ski mask, they do it using a laptop. When was the last time you saw a high speed car chase in real life or on one of those Police Camera Action type shows where it wasn't simply a bunch of toe rags joy riding?

These cars are either being broken and sold for parts or taken and shipped to the far off lands and sold. The streets of Uganda will no doubt be awash with Golf Rs in the next year.

Cash in transit van robberies are still committed on a regular basis (i.e. as cash points are being filled up by G4S etc - so much so that police are regularly tasked with following CIT vans when they have some down time), stolen high performance cars used as a get away car.
Robberies of places like McColls still happen weekly (in fact, one happened hear me 2 weeks ago). A stolen Golf R was used as the get away car in that one (also believed to have been used in numerous other similar offences recently)
Thefts of cash machine cassettes (rip it out the wall using a stolen JCB, grab the cash cassettes, use a stolen high performance car to get away) are still happening.

So yes, they ARE used as get away cars.

Attempted break in for car keys yesterday in South East London. 3 youths in a stolen car. Neighbours scared them off thankfully, but making me thing twice about holding onto the car

I've not seen a car jacking, or been jacked myself, but it happens. Your second paragraph however, is the most likely reason for it.

The person who said drive a rubbish car is quite true. The way the roads are these days, and scum bags pinching cars to order, it's becoming an attractive option if living in an urban area. Having said that, a plain looking Golf with the performance of the R would be a good compromise smile

I've ordered one, so think I will have a knife handy in it.
Maybe they are targeting them to break them?
Don't understand why else they are not that fast compared to some stuff out there.

Yeah... Don't do that, unless you're happy with it being taken off you and used against you. Which is the most likely outcome.

Or get pulled over by the Police.

It's seriously concerning how many of these Golf R's are being stolen. It's put so many people off getting one and it's a real shame.

You shouldn't let scum dictate what you want to buy but when you've got a family to worry about i can completely understand the logic. Sometimes it's just not worth it at all.

Many are keys being taken in the night which is bad enough. But encounters like this are even more frightening. Hope you're okay OP. It would certainly shake me up a fair bit!

This country has got to the stage where we need to take our own action.
Its not an option to sit back and let someone take your car, as they will think nothing of stabbing you anyway.

I feel sorry for the police, as they are very under equipped to deal with the threats on our streets, which is probably why they simply dont deal with them.

I've only ever seen armed Police at Airports during heightened security, or in London around Buckingham Palace when there's an event on.

Been on holiday to many parts of the world and many countries have armed police walking the streets. And police presence on the roads is diminishing too. It's all politics and paperwork in this country, and zero action, hence why crims are able to literally get away with murder here.

Even stowing a baseball bat in the car is guaranteed to get you arrested, rather than the crims for nicking your car.

Armed police strolling around Borough Market just the other day. Nothing special going on. Was quite surprised.

I think people realise that a little batton or tazer isn't actually much good.
The sooner they stop criminalising victims for wanting to defend their families, possessions and themselves the better.

Bit of a thread resurrection....

Some 6 months after it happened to me, I warned a good friend who lives in North London, to think about security and be more vigilant, as he just purchased a brand new S3 at the time. Within 3 months his front door was knocked down at 2am while sleeping and threatened for the keys. Clearly allot worse than my situation..

As a comment made earlier, you cannot let these scumbags dictate what you drive, however certain cars just increase the risk of it happening, unfortunately the Golf R/ S3 is in that list. My old car was eventually found, after it had been crashed/written off into a skip lorry some 4 months after, none of the drivers were hurt and just ran off - shame...

A father of one of my son's friends had his S3 stolen from Bishops Stortford about five weeks ago. The house was broken into to get the keys and they stole the S3 at 7pm on a Sunday night. Thankfully no one was at home. He has however, ordered a Golf R to replace it. Why he's replacing the S3 with a Golf R is astonishing as that will probably get stolen too.

I had left my car at my in-laws whilst away, and they parked it on their neighbours drive so it was out of their way - imagine my "surprise" to hear the neighbour had been broken into overnight and nothing taken.

Reckon they were looking for the R keys and left empty handed - didn't tell the neighbour though!

I hope the SEAT Leon Cupra Black Estate is not such a large magnet for trouble...

My business partner was robbed last year by four guys in a stolen Golf (not an R), they took his Range Rover key and his Rolex. Happened in a little village just outside Welwyn Garden City at 9am, they'd followed him from London.

They were pointing an automatic weapon at him at the time, he didn't resist!

Sorry to hear about this OP. R's seem to be getting nicked more than any other car in recent times. A worrying trend.

Are these cars not fitted with trackers then? Are they not being tracked when they are initially taken? Surely they can be traced to a last known location before they are broken up/bunged inside a shipping container?

Worse I'd say as Cossies could be nicked without threatening the owner in his home.
