Recently had my car in a for a service and to look at a grinding noise on braking.

So it had a full service, 4 new springs (1 front and 1 back were snapped), and new pads and discs up front.

And still i have the grinding noise, and its driving me nuts!

The only other things which need further attention is a split CV boot (i think thats what the service report said), and a wire that has something to do with the brakes abs sensor (brakes warning light on dash).

Has anyone any ideas if the two issues mentioned above could be the cause of the grinding noise, or any other ideas on what may be causing it? Of course the car is going back to the service centre for them to double check everything, but i can't get it there until Friday.

Anyone? I've not managed to get it to the garage yet.

if the abs/brake pad sensor wire is broken(both on the same loom in the pass wheelarch, then the abs could be kicking in? but I'd expect you to have abs light on the dash.

I presume the braking system has been fully checked out for low pads/worn discs or stones stuck in it?

Probably worth getting the split CV boots fixed sooner rather than later. Its an MOT fail and if not attended to can cause further damage.

Not sure about the grinding noise, can you be more specific about what scenarios it occurs under?

Its just had near front pads and discs, as we thought the grinding noise was the heavily corroded (on the inner edge) discs, and pads were on 3mm.

There is a break warning light on the dash (thought to be caused by the broken sensor wire).

The noise is only really noticable when breaking at slow speeds, ie coming to a rest for lights etc.

So if you lift off the brake the noise stops? Back on the pedal it comes back?

I had this on my Mk5, it was the backplate on the back brakes rubbing against the disc.

I changed the pads anyway as they were low but bending the backplate away from the disc fixed all my noises. It was driving me nuts as it would seemingly happen at random.

I had this with a seized caliper once.

Particularly annoyed that the garage told me I was imagining it when I said I was worried about a seized caliper, then charged me for discs and calipers for the next MOT... furious I use a different garage now.

First thing to check is the backplates as someone mentioned, they do come loose and move about but you tend to hear them rattling

Sorry for the bump, but this is still ongoing, i've had the back plates taken off (1 was cracked), and replaced. To do this the pads and discs had to come off. But the noise is still there under braking!
