Fellas, really useful, thank you. Tim, what is the VED on yours, £110?
£30! Going to be the worst thing about moving to the S4!
Looks like we're inverting our VED then, the AM was nearly £500 pa. What bracket does the S4 fit into?

I have a 2015 A6 Avant 2.0 TDI Black Ed S Tronic Ultra (190). Agree that it's a great car, won't set the world on fire in terms of performance but it's great in the motorway. Just to add, the ride on the 20"s (standard on BE) is acceptable, in fact I would say that it is better than any BMW I have driven which had run flats. V comfortable seats as well.

Mine is on a personal lease for 2 years and 15k pa miles. So far, I love it.

That's good to hear, as the majority of the reviews are fairly critical of the ride on the 20" wheels. I'll be smashing in the motorway miles so hopefully it'll more than cope with the M6........if anything can cope with the M6!

I haven't actually checked, but think it's less than £280 so not AM bad! Agree with the comments about the ride though. No issues at all on the 20's. I'd go so far as to say it's actually pretty comfy!

Except you are talking about the c6 with the PD engine not the c7 with the reliable and much better CR/SCR engines. So your opinions are not valid.

The 2.0 cr170/177 and the SCR 190 "ultra" are generally good engines

Well that's very opinionated - touched a nerve? I think having owned 4x A6's petrol & diesel and driven plenty more including the new C7 version my opinion is valid = feel underpowered and you have to adapt your driving style. I am not saying they are bad cars just IMO they are heavy car for the output. A golf blue motion economy version on our fleet easily outperforms the A6 2.0 period....

As for reliability yes the C6 2.0 weren't the best and I guess C7's are still too new to form an opinion in the aftermarket network, hopefully they revert to type & remain reliable as the C6 caused a damaged to its reputation.

Mine lives on the M6/A590! The ride is genuinely decent for the size of wheels. I am currently returning 45mpg which is a little disappointing, but hopefully it will rise a bit once the engine is bedded in a bit.

Really appreciate the info chaps, thank you for the responses so far. Clearly the requirement to test drive is gaining momentum. Interesting to hear about the ride quality of the Black Edition, as this stood out as a criticism on most of the reviews I'd read. I'm coming from a reasonably quick sports car but have had a Focus as a DD, which simply doesn't cut the commute from the Midlands to Cornwall or North Wales where I'm based.

I'm leaning toward the tiptronic rather than manual, as stirring a stick in traffic is painful. Somewhere in the back of my mind is the thought of an S4, I had the 4.2 version which was mighty, but economy will have priority. Any thoughts on A4 chassis versus A6? Clearly bigger, heavier, but does the A4 have a more sporty feel? Essentially load space and passenger comfort is largely irrelevant to me, but the interior of the A6 appears to have a slightly more luxurious interior.

Keep it coming, all really useful.
S4/a4 S5/A5 will be/should be changing this year (last model to be updated out of audi range), had a brief conversation with a dealer a few weeks back and they said brand new they were struggling for s4/s5 slots in any form. (Seem to churn out loads of the 2L dervs for now though). So be wary if you go down that route (depreciation could be worse).

With A6, we had an 2L Avant as a courtesy car earlier this year, it felt a bit gutless compared to the 3L diesel we have (A5 Sportback S-tronic), runs out of puff considerably quicker and nowhere near as refined as the 3L was. Guess it depends on how the test drive goes, but don't make a decision until you've driven both would be my advice. Or as above bugger it and get an S4 biggrin
We are currently looking at replacing our A5 Sportback to a RRS (old shape), Disco 4, or A6 3L. But we only do a max of 8K miles a year so I guess our choices are different.

S4/S5 Are both pinned at £265 I think biggrin (3L Diesel Avant is £180 I think in the A6 (250PS) - Bi Tdi 3L (313PS) is £205)

They are not the fastest of cars but i would say they are 'adequate'

I have had 4 of the a6 2.0 Tdi Avants including 2 black Editions. They are fantastic motorway cars and extremely comfortable, even with the 20" wheels.

The 2.0 are bought for one reason above the larger engined cars as can be seen below after a 35 mile outing

I find that all of my a6's have got faster and more economical after 10k miles, don't know if anyone else has found this also?

There is always a kind of sacrifice to pay for performance but i find these 100% bang on for a good all round family car, especially the DSG ones.

Oh, and as far as reliability goes, only fault I have had with all of my a6 cars was a rear mirror that stopped dipping on reverse. That was sorted with a reset - thats all.

I've had a A6 avant 2.7 V6 from new for the last 9 years ... It's THE BEST CAR I've OWNED.

Fast enough, economical enough & as I drive to the Alps x4 every year, it a boss. After 7hrs on the autoroute it then spins up the mountains like a whippet. Perfect combo. Go v6 !

3L V6 with a s-tronic box is a massive improvement on that too just try one! ( we had a 2.7 v6 a6 manual, 3l v6 a6 manual, on 3l A5 Sportback S-tronic next is A6 Avant 3L S-tronic we think).

2L Is much less refined next to a 3L and doesnt really like to push on much at all, adequate but not a patch on the 3L.... Bi Tdi is pretty spritely too (313 ps rather than 250ps)
