Well I've taken the plunge and I'll be getting a new A1 S Line in the next week or so leased (at a very good rate) from the sister company of who I work for. I'll be getting rid of my Mini in the next few weeks.

It's the S Line spec so hopefully I'll be happy with it.

I thought if I'm going to save money on my car then I'd go for the most economical, but is 80mpg realistic? If it is, the car will pay for itself in money saved in fuel!

Anybody else have one?

What is the 5 speed gearbox like on the motorway? I'm sure it's fine, I'm just used to 6 cogs!

so you pay 20k

the petrol is 19.1k

lets say 55mpg diesel and 40mpg petrol

1.13 per litre petrol

1.18 diesel

15k miles a year

1500 per year diesel cost

1906 per year petrol cost

so 2 years will start to save over petrol but i would go petrol.

I'm getting 20 - 25 mpg out of my Mini. I do between 15k to 20k miles. I'll be saving a lot.

My wife drives an A3 1.6 TDI with the CR engine. It is painfully slow and manages 55 mpg at a push.

We are getting rid next month.

The A1 is a good car, but I had a lot of problems with the 1.6TDI engine. The 1.4cod is a much better option, not quite as economical but better in every other way

They've actually just replaced the old 1.6 TDI with an all new EU6 compliant unit (EA288). Its very new to the market and only a handful of cars have it such as the facelift A1 and new Golf Bluemotion (both in 110PS form). So we should probably give it a chance rather than dismissing because the old one was crap smile

Oh and I agree the 1.4 TFSI COD is better but it costs more and at 15 - 20k miles per year you'll be using more fuel. The petrol alternative to the 1.6 TDI would be the 1.0 TFSI but that's slower.

yes you will around 2.5k a year in fuel

but will lose 3k a year in depreciation and saving money is a not really the right word..

but you really bought it for a new car which is good.

I've the 2.0tdi CR in my new A3 and get 62mpg combined. I would hope the A1 beats that!

Ignore those trashing the A1 1.6TDI. I have driven one and it was very easy to drive and nippy. It will just run out of puff at the top end, but you didn't buy it for that.

Enjoy it - nice cars

I rented an A3 in Germany with the 1.6 tdi engine in January, it wasn't slow, in fact I was surprised with the acceleration above 100mph. It also was reasonably quite and refined at at indicated 120mph.

The 1.4COD is sloooow and you really have to thrash it to get it moving like all small patrols.

The 1.6TDI is standard effortless diesel.

Thanks Valo, I was a bit worried with the feedback!

I drove a 1.6 TDI A3 today and thought it was reasonably nippy on the move. The A1 is sub 10 seconds 0-60 but it's not about that. It's about trouble free motoring. The economy is a bonus. I understand depreciation but I'm getting a very good deal on it so that's fine.

Hopefully have it next week so I'll chuck a pic up once it's here!

laugh you can't have spent much time in either then, the COD is much quicker, and does not need to be thrashed at all, it has same torque as the 1.6tdi

I have driven both, yes. The 1.4 COD didn't do anything when I put my foot to the floor, just made a bit more noise. The diesel is much nicer to drive.

I got that economy from my 5 litre M5. Either you are driving in traffic all the time or you have a very heavy right foot.

Both of these plus the 1.6 supercharged engine with the mods I have is bloody juicy!

I had an A1 S-Line with a 1.6TDI engine a couple of years ago and I really liked it. Today though, they are very common and do now have a girly image, the majority I see now are driven by teenage/young 20's females.

No, you will not get anywhere near 80mpg, it wont get even remotely close to that. When I had mine, official combined fuel consumption was 74mpg and my real day to day average was 57mpg, a million miles away from what Audi led me to believe. It may on the odd occasion do 65-70mpg on a run at 60mph over a distance of 100 miles or so but use it around town and at 70-75mph and that average will dip below 60mpg. Fuel economy will plummet when its cold or when you have passengers in the car also. I used it mainly for commuting, (90% motorway) cruise set at 68mph

The 5th gear doesn't help its fuel economy, definitely requires a 6th in my opinion.

Well a colleague of mine had his delivered today and I'm quite impressed with it to be honest. Not keen on the black body and Silver roof but luckily mine should be Grey all over (fingers crossed)!

I'm really looking forward to it now and I'm kind of thinking 6 months is too short a period so I'll try to get something on a 12 month term next.

Thank you for the info above... Apparently it's a revised engine and has a few changes to aid efficiency like electric steering. I believe the A3 I've driven had the electronic steering and it wasn't too bad (you can definitely feel it get heavier the faster you go but it had a horrible tendency to hold straight ahead of you know what I mean).

Anyway, who cares, I've only got it for 6 months and then I can get an A3 / A4 or possibly a C Class depending on £££'s.
