My sister has asked me for some info on the Mk7 Golf GTD, she's looking into possibly leasing one and is wondering what the pros and cons are in having one, I know very little about them myself so hope to get some info from anyone who currently has a mk7 GTD

Also if anyone has any good lease details I'd appreciate it if you could let me know

Been running one for 16 months together with another similar car in the company.

They have been reliable, solid ,pretty economical whilst still being an excellent drivers car. VWs standard spec is generous and you really could take a completely stock car without a single option and not feel short changed. We only added the basic Nav and even took the flat red as a colour choice which I wouldn't change , looks great.

Both cars have returned 45mpg overall (25000 miles each )

We got a coupe of internet CH Quotes then asked our local dealer to match them, worked out at £300 pm for 15000 miles

The car comes with front assist , which lowers insurance premiums and allows active cruise control, BUT I had a low speed shunt when the car in front of me threw me a dummy at a roundabout and discovered the radar camera is in the most vulnerable position possible right in the middle of the bumper. A lower than 5mph impact broke it and the car didn't automatically brake which it does at higher speeds. Very annoying and expensive repair/insurance claim (£1200!!! )

Will be replacing mine in January and right now I cannot think of a single car that would be a better choice. Image, feel good factor, handling, performance ,economy, running costs and equipment all everything you could want really. Great all rounder.

Thanks for the info Dblue, the GTD sounds like a good package overall, I had a mk4 GT TDi years ago which was a very reliable car, seems like nothing's changed on that front. Do they have a DPF?? That was my only concern in my sister leasing one as she lives in London and will be using it to commute into work, but if she's leasing one for a couple of years then she shouldn't have any DPF trouble I'd have thought.

Is front assist standard?? Am I reading it right that it supposed to automatically brake if you are getting to close to the car in front?? Sounds like a good idea

Yep, Front Assist is standard on all Golfs - it contributes greatly to the low insurance on them, but as a few people have found out, it is not foolproof.

It does have a DPF too. My daily commute is less than 10 miles in fairly slow traffic and regens are not actually that frequent. I think you're fine as long as you throw in a decent journey once in a while.

I'm 14 months into a GTD and like the poster above, I can't really think of many cars that I would want to replace it.

The front assist can be a pain in the arse at times though.

The one on my missus' Golf activated randomly one day last week and it hit the brakes on a clear road at 60mph much to her surprise. nuts

It also beeps at you if the car thinks you aren't braking hard enough coming up to a junction with another car already stopped. I do very much dislike being nannied relentlessly by some of these systems.

I've not had any issues with it personally.

Front Assist can be turned off in the menus. Its similar to Stop/ Start and Auto Hold, there to make driving easier but not everyone likes it!

I didn't actually think it applied the brakes above 19mph (unless you're using ACC of course, which is a different matter). This page would seem to confirm that -

I've had a few issues with the Driver Assist, especially on round-abouts as mentioned previously. It also seems to have problems when certain high lorries undertake in traffic.

Other than that it's a great car. Mine is around £250 a month inc vat (Personal Lease) for 10k a year. This is with VWFS via a dealer.

Thankyou for all the useful info, my sister seems to have her mind set on a GTD now so it's just a case of finding the best deal, the best I've come up with from a leasing company is £290 all in on a 2 year lease with 10k a year, would the best course of action be to take that quote and approach a few dealers and see if they can match/beat that??

Would it be better to use a dealer where possible even if it was say £20 a month more or just go with the best price I can get??

Do not only look at the monthly payment but also the initial payment that can be 3,6,9 or 12 months. It is generally cheaper to have a bigger initial payment and cheaper monthly payments but I would personally pay about £200 extra over the 2 year lease to pay an initial payment of 3 months payment and then 23 monthly higher payments.

The reason I would do this is if the car was stolen or written off in the first few months the lease company normally cancel the agreement and you have to start again so if you had say £2000 initial payment you would lose that where as if your initial payment was £700 you would only lose that.If that makes sense.

With a bit of searching you can get a deal on a Golf GTD on a personal lease for two years for an initial payment of £750 and 23 months at £250.

That works out at £6500 for a two year lease and I have seen them at £6000 a few weeks ago.Search around for a few weeks as the lease companies are bringing new quarter 2 deals now and would expect them to be cheaper that quarter 1.

I would look for the cheapest deal on the internet and go with that one unless a dealer can get very close to it.

Don't hold your breath, I very much doubt you can get anywhere near that.

I will give you an example why it can be cheaper to have a 5k a year lease compared with a 10k one.

Freedom lease,personal including VAT.

5000 miles initial payment 719.94 23 months 239.98 total for 2 year lease 6239.48
10000 miles initial payment 867.94 23 months 287.98 total for 2 year lease 7491.48

So to have the 10k lease it costs 1252 more than a 5k lease.

If you take out a 5k lease and end up doing 10K miles pay the 0.062 pence per mile including VAT so you pay an extra 310 pounds to do 10k miles so this works out 942 cheaper than a 10k lease.

There was a personal lease last week where the company had 50 Golf GTDs on offer on a personal lease 5k miles for a two year lease for 23 months at 207 and an initial payment of 1242 so a total of 6003 including VAT but they sold out in a couple of days.

Google Golf GTD personal lease deals and check through the lease companies websites particularly the new quarter 2 lease deals and within a few weeks you will get a Golf GTD personal lease including VAT on a two year deal for between £6000-6250.

I am looking for this deal as I want a golf GTD as a run around to keep the miliage down on the cars I have so when I see this type of deal I will post it here.

The deal from Freedom I quoted that is available now:

5000 miles initial payment 719.94 23 months 239.98 total for 2 year lease 6239.48

Plus if you do an extra 5k miles it will cost you an extra 310 in charges so that is a grand total of £6549.48

This deal above is less than £50 more than the previos deal at 23 x 250 and an initial payment of 750 = £6500

So I got very close to it and over the next couple of weeks there will be even better deals.

It won't be an extra 5000 miles though, it will be an extra 10000 miles across the term, so would cost £620. I know we're splitting hairs here but we may as well be accurate.

Why are the prices coming down?

Also do not forget the excess mileage charges are often on a sliding scale with leases.

Ie 6.2p for up to 5000 miles over, 15p thereafter.

Fair comment with your points.

National Vehicle Solutions, personal two year lease including VAT.Golf GTD.

Total price for 5000 miles £6064.89.8000 miles £6791.00

If you buy a new car cash its easy to get a minimun of 10% off so I expect if you contacted a leasing company and main dealers they may give you 10% off the deal.If you dont ask you dont get and who pays what people are asking regarding cars.

Or ring them up and say I want a Golf GTD 5 door, personal lease deal over two years,10k miles and my maximum budget is £6500.There will be someone ready to do a deal with you.

Would be interested to know how that goes for you. With no shortage of people wanting GTDs I can't see why they'd discount them further than they have already, but I guess it's worth a try.
