I think I have narrowed by next car choice down to three options:

Audi A5 2.0 TFSi
Mk6 Golf GTi
Scirocco 2.0 TFSi GT

In each case by budget allows for a 2009 model with between 70-100k on the clock.

I am arranging to view/drive one of each this weekend, but I wonder if any owners on here can give me an insight into the plus/minus points of each, anything specific I should be looking for as problems.

I know about the oil consumption / piston ring issued on A5s, but does this affect other cars with the TFSi?

always interesting to hear from real life owners, rather than internet reviews.
Thanks

all 2.0 tfsi's with the cam chain (of that era) carry the risk of burning oil.

Personally I would go for a scirocco or golf, as the a5 is much heavier and lardy

Not an A5, but I've run a A4 Avant (B8) 2.0 TFSI Quattro for three and a half years/50K miles. The car's an '09 with 70K on it now.

Costs: MPG averages around 30-31 (mostly A/B road driving)
Servicing : Covered by Audi fixed price servicing, which is pretty reasonably priced.
Condition: The car feels just as solid and rattle-free now as when I first got it
Failures: One front wheel bearing, and a courtesy light bulb. That's it.
Dealers: I've (almost) nothing but praise for mine, but you'll find plenty of horror stories too.
Oil consumption: Just had pistons, rods, rings replaced FOC.

Driving : Oil problems aside, the 2.0TFSI is a great engine. Lots of tuning options, although quattro is recommended if you're planning that. Even without the sports suspension it feels well planted and surprisingly quick. Hope that helps...

GTI has the most character and smiles per mile

Scirocco/ A5 feel a bit more normal but have the benefit of still been the current shape

Depends what you want from the car really!

Well, yeah smile I should really have listed the engine internals as "consumables".

The oil consumption issues predominantly affect the in-line version of the EA888 2.0 TFSI; I've not yet seen the same problem on its transverse (Golf/A3/TT) brother.

Word is that Audi are now very quietly putting their hand up to the problem and have seen them repair FOC cars well out of warranty with Audi history. Not yet seen a case with non-Audi servicing.

It's a bit third-hand, but...

well....i'm officially a failure! the guy at the dealer said the parts were paid for, they have to mail Audi the full report etc and get notice back as to what my contribution should be. he obviously couldn't make an official statement but he said Audi have generally been great, one previous car had no Audi service history (but fully serviced at an indy, they asked for copies) and they paid for that too, so hopefully there shouldn't be any issues at all w/ my fully Audi-serviced car with pretty low mileage.

Several reports there of owners getting refunds from Audi after they'd had to pay for the work to be done.

So, Scirocco it is then!

I preferred the driving experience of the Scirocco to the Golf, felt more special/sharper/sportier. the A5 was a lovely thing but, by god it was boring to drive!

time to start shopping for the right car.
