Not sure if it is just mine but fuel is horrendous. 275 miles to a tank! (old T5 was bad but least that had a large tank) Wasn't expecting great mpg but town running mostly with a few longer runs and I'm getting 15mpg, highest I've seen is low 20s after a bit of Mway use. To avoid trips to the pumps am mostly driving it in Economy mode, but that rather defeats the whole point of having a car like this.

The clicky box is back to front when using the lever, should be forward for down and back for up, as in when you are braking you push forward when accelerating you pull back.

The performance is great.

Silly things like no handle on estate boot, why? I'd have thought Ze Germans would be really good at these small details.

Handle for closing boot is on the inside.

15mpg improving to low 20's on a motorway run? yikes Surely that can't be representative - something like an RS6 or even the old model C63 Merc would do better than that!

Indeed, my thought exactly.

And with such a small tank 275 miles isn't going to get you anywhere.

Old 2.5 turbo 5 cyl was better.

There are two pockets on the inside of the tailgate, to each side of the locking mechanism. The idea is that you grab these when the boot is up, and pull it down, rather than pulling the actual outside edge of the boot lip.

There are two sort of squares but they are filled in, not a recess but will have a closer look to see if they are false and come away.

Even my wife's Focus has a recess to use.

There's pockets on the inside face of the tailgate for your hands, if you don't want them to get grubby touching the outside of the boot.

My Golf R averages 23.5mpg and I tend to always "be in a hurry".

The only time I had it down to around 15mpg was a day on track at Thruxton (when it was 3 days old!!).

You say you get 275 miles to the tank - the tank has a capacity of 55 litres equating to 12.1 gallons which in my maths is 22.73 mpg!!

Thought the point of the 4 pot turbo was to be more efficient that the older v6. My mk 4 returns an average of 28 on motorways.

Agreed, I'd be very surprised if low/ mid 30s mpg wasn't achievable on longer runs. They seem to get about the same as the Mk5 GTI did

The tank is too small for such a thirsty car.

55 litres isn't it, which is increased from the measly 50 litres other Golfs get.

He must do alot of motorways and/or drive like Miss Daisy!!

Whilst my 24mpg suffers a bit from the Greater London traffic, I struggle to get over 35mpg on a motorway so no chance on everyday roads even if they were empty!!

Oh and another annoying thing, rain water pours off the roof straight onto door switchgear if the window is open

can see gaffer tape coming out here on the long roof rail
Same happens on the mk5 and mk6. Very annoying

Currently driving Golf R Estate for a road test feature in the forthcoming Jan 2016 issue of Volkswagen Driver magazine Lapiz blue, with 18s and DCC I'll be interested to hear from owners with R Estate about their own experiences, impressions, findings ( mpg etc ) in particular what their previous cars were and why they chose R Estate ( has anyone changed from an R hatch to an R Estate I wonder? )
Please email me at Neil.Birkitt@autometrix.co.uk cheers :-) Neil Birkitt Editor, Volkswagen Driver magazine
Averaged 30.4 mpg overall, with a best fig for economical driving ( 60 mph motorway cruise ) of 38.7 mpg. 0-60 mph in 5.0 secs using standard DSG standing-start, but recorded an astounding 4.43 sec 0-60 time using launch control in perfect conditions ( bone dry, cold 6°C, in race mode running on Shell V-Power) And all with a car that quite comfortably took elderly parents out for a sunday drive on previous weekend ( DCC in comfort mode and DPS in Eco/Efficiency mode ) = a very impressive all-rounder. Full road test in Feb issue of Volkswagen Driver mag, out in mid January...

My RS6 does indeed do better than that. 18 mpg short trips / town. 28 on motorway at decent speed. 22 average since I have owned it.
My daughter has Golf R hatchback , lives in London and gets just under 30mpg average.
