Whilst considering options for a supercar that may also be a sound purchase, and by that I mean hopefully won't lose money and might actually make some, the R8 V10 continually crops up and wasn't one I considered previously.

At around £60-70k for a ~2010 model, would owners and Audi enthusiasts alike suggest this might be the bottom price now, or would the V8 make a more viable option?

No-one likes taking prices really, but equally, most like to think they make shrewd purchases, so would welcome opinion.

It would have to be manual, but I gather that is the option to have. Any other options, colours etc that you'd consider a must?

Yes, do it. They're wonderful and prices haven't really moved in a long while. They vary just by specification and mileage.

V10s come pretty well specified as standard but parking sensors are a must and I would want some of the additional interior carbon/leather goodies.

If it would be useful send me your email and I'll bounce back PDFs of the relevant brochures so you can see exactly what was standard/available.

Problems are largely right foot related (normal consumables) but they can suffer problems with air conditioning, particularly if not very regularly used and the mag-ride dampers don't last all that well. They're also 600 odd quid each to replace. Clutch life is entirely down the the driver; you could knacker it in 10k if you're hamfisted and drive around town but equally I've seen 40k mile cars where the clutch feels brand new. Virtually all R8s will have had cosmetic paintwork unless they've done no miles so make sure it is just cosmetic and not hiding a bonk. They're suckers for picking up chips on the nose. Wheels are easy to kerb, a bit of a faff to keep clean but there are a few places around now that do a really good job of refurbishing them in the correct finish for about 400 quid a set.

The noise the V10 makes over about 5k revs is a big rush.

if you are after a well looked after one, here is a good one:

a chap from RS246.com is selling it and he is a top Audi enthusiast - pretty rare spec too. would be worth a look just to set expectations.

Thanks for the replies so far guys, I've emailed you for the brochure, really appreciate that.

The link you sent is for an absolutely fantastic car, close to me too, but sadly I'd want a manual and I couldn't live with the brown interior, though it does actually look rather nice.

Is the extended warranty from Audi worth it? I believe they charge around £1,800 per year! Also, was there a crucial run-in service that had to be carried out, or just Audi's standard 20,000 miles or 2 years.

I bought an approved used V10 R8 last October with about 10k miles on it and thought I'd take a decent hit by the time I go to sell it (usually keep cars a year) but prices have held very firm.

I went for an approved used car and insisted on a 2 year warranty as although the R8 is very mechanically sound there are a few known issues as mentioned above. Air con and mag ride are the key ones and warranty will cover the air con and from what I've read quite often the mag ride if you have a friendly dealer.

I found the interior pretty bland unless it has full extended leather with contrast stitching and/or carbon bits which make it feel a bit more special.

I also went for a car with the carbon ceramics which are very good, completely fade free and keep the wheels nice and shiny!

As mentioned, most cars will have had paint on the bonnet as they pick up chips easily and I found Audi dealer paint standards are not particularly good so have a good close look in good light.

As a car, very quick, surprisingly nimble and rear drive biased. I've just done 1,300 miles around France, Germany and Belgium and found the V10 fun, fast, comfortable and although it's thirsty the 90 litre tank gives it excellent range for Euro blats.

in regards to extended warranty - you can opt for running gear only or the full comprehensive policy (covers sat nav etc...) so its not always super expensive, but as mentioned they are generally pretty tough machines. I personally go for the idea of being wary that things can go wrong and you will need a slush fund or cover to deal with it - i opt for the slush fund. Unless you are super unlucky, then you may save a bit over time going without any cover.

I guess it depends how long you plan to own the car - if you want to run it for a year or so and get close to free motoring (based on current residuals) then probably worth having it to give the next person peace of mind. If you plan on buying a keeper, then maybe go for it for the first year or so and then see how it pans out.

Good luck with the hunt though!

Hi , interested in the known air-con problem which I didn't pick up when I bought mine 18 months ago. I now have a problem in that it doesn't work!

What is the issue and recommendations on where to get if fixed (Surrey)?

Thanks in advance

PS OP- 18 months in with mine - 1st class car all round and apologies for mini thread hijack

I bought one a couple of months and am still absolutely in love with it....mines a little bit special in that it is red, with the bucket seats which certainly lift the drab interior...it also has full carbon pack, and alacantara headlining that also is a plus.

Ive had loads of fast cars including a stage 4 GTR, 997, numerous M3s, M5, etc and the r8 v10 is the best all rounder by far.

Ill add further thoughts to this thread when I get some time!

ps an alacantar steering wheel (£150 retrim) makes a huge difference to the horid standard steering wheel too!

Have a look on R8talk as there is plenty of info there. I believe there are a couple of common air con issues, one is a condenser failure and the other is some sort of sensor failure. When I first got mine out of winter storage the aircon was not working and the auto light was flashing. Re started the car and not had the same problem since. It went into Audi for a free inspection recently and I mentioned the one off problem but it hadn't thrown up any codes.

Audi dealers do a free health check which may be your first port of call, get a price form them for a fix and then phone around some indys? I haven't used any local indys yet but have been recommended a place down in Haywards Heath (might be a bit far) called QST http://www.qstuning.com/

Owned a V8 coupe and loved it, amazing handling but a little lacking in power.

Now have V10 spyder, awesome car, not as nimble as it's much heavier but it's very quick indeed.

Have been watching the used market for several years, I think depreciation on a early car will be minimal.

Go for the V10, you won't regret it

forgive me for stealing in, but considering ? swapping from the dark side, after 3 years of XKR joy. Fancy a change and ideally a manual spyder. Being used to the 500bhp of the Jag, would you expect the V8 to be "enough" or is the search for a V10 worth the effort.
Also any wisdom on the pros and cons of the mag ride would be appreciated.
What are the service/ upkeep costs likely to be per annum, (my Jags have cost very little relatively). Not too leaden footed all the time, try and drive it roof down most days but annual miles will be less than 5k.Suspect enhanced costs will be balanced by less depreciation, unless the new models coming on song will change the used values?
Probably head for main dealer since I dont know the vagaries of the model well; extended warranties seem much higher than for the XKR but guess due to complexity and drivetrain.
Any words of wisdom will be gratefully received, many thanks. Phil

Yeah. I loved that car, so much so I tried to buy it back many times from Andrew unsuccessfully and in the end bought another red one identical from Leeds Audi.

I did this to it,

http://www.draykefields.co.uk/archive/26-redaudir8...

Transformed it, but it still needed a front end respray, as they all do.

Has to be a V10
They are bullet proof.
I have owned 5 V10 R8's over 3 yrs and not one has borked and depreciation has been pretty much zero

I like R-Tronic too smile

With a little bit of practice they're really good fun. The bad rep comes from lazy journalists and people expecting a conventional automatic.
