I was looking at some TT's in a local Audi dealership and I asked the salesman if there was anything to look out for on an early TTRS, with a straight face he said "it's an Audi, they don't go wrong". I wonder if I would get that in writing if I bought a used car from them ?

I've heard of a couple of TTRS engine failures, but I think they were both heavily modified cars.

laugh When I bought my full Audi history used A4 I asked Audi UK if the 10 year/120k extended warranty the Yanks got on some parts would be honoured here, they denied all knowledge of it.

Audi's certainly go wrong, but they do tend to be model specific.

RS4 (B7) - Engine coking, DRC failures
A4 (B8) 2.0T - oil issues and engine failures

There are models which appear to be robust, you just need to go in with your eyes open and choose carefully.

Same as most German marques!

I've had an A4 B7 2.0tqa for 3 years, I'd have changed it for the B8 version if Audi didn't deny the pistons were made out of chocolate. The Audi sales gits look at it like something they wish they hadn't seen laugh.

Not seen Audi decline or argue with an oil consumption job lately.

Is OP sure the salesman wasn't having a giggle?

What's Audi's cut off point for fixing older B8's ? As for the salesman he didn't seem the humorous type.

Not sure there is one. Service history seems to matter, though. My '09 A4 with 68K miles was dealt with entirely FOC in April this year.

They appear to be covering it from launch although I've not seen anyone with starship miles or patchy service history ask.

Thanks for the information. I remember BMW fitting new modified short engines to sort out their oil control issue, but I've read Audi will only fit a set of pistons ? I fancy a newer 2.0tqa, was it around 2010 the engine was changed to stop the problem ?

I disagree.

You should hear the creak from the driver's seatbelt holder on my A3.

I never went away , I am still here to annoy you Mr Warm and fussy

Strange I thought your head would have popped up over the parapet more often of late to provide me with a target .

In most important areas, modern Audis are no more/no less reliable than any other of the German brands that class themselves as 'premium'. There does seem to be a perceived drop in reliability compared to 10 years ago, but the cars are much more complex now than then. They are building the cars down in cost terms, so unexpected (to the customer) faults are fairly likely.

I live in fear of an s-tronic failure, even though they are relatively rare, because they can't be repaired and the cost of replacement is eye watering. Makes the allegedly 'chocolate' ZF 5 speed box auto in my 2002 S8 look like a bargain to replace, and that's the often quoted reason at the bottom of the market for many being scrapped!

I don't fear being the 1st or 2nd owner of a modern Audi, but I'm not sure I'd want to still be owning our 4 year old one at 10 years old, like we did with our C5 A6.

The main issue I have is the lack of customer service in the UK - we definitely suffer from the arms length relationship between Audi Germany and the UK distributor who just wants to sell as many as possible and spend as little as possible on goodwill unless told to do otherwise, at the Germans expense.
