Hi

My wife filled our diesel A3 with petrol. The tank prior to filling was nearly empty so now has a full tank of petrol.
She drove for circa 50 miles before loosing power and eventually the engine stalled and would not start again.

Can anyone give me an indication of cost to repair and is it likely I will need to have the engine replaced? Currently I'm waiting for Audi to price the work but want to know if anyone else has had a similar experience?

Thanks

L

1,9 is very robust to misfueling. more so than the C.R engines.

However running it for 50 miles until it stopped could have irrepairable damage.

Call your insurer and see if you are covered for miss fueling.

If it doesnt say you are not in the small print and you are fully comp they should pay out.

We have a C.R A5 in at the moment, misfueled an HP pump failed, repair bill is circa £3.5k

From my experience of Main dealers they'll cover their arse by replacing EVERYTHING!.
Get one of the fuel rescue people out to drain the tank & then refill with diesel. Then try it, only then involve garages.
I did the same with my Jaguar in France & drive 30 miles, until it made strange noises, it was still going though. Had it drained & refilled with diesel & it was fine for the next 30K miles.

Your wife is not alone as it’s a common mistake to make, occurring on average every 3 minutes in the UK with roughly 150,000 motorists filling their tank with the wrong fuel every year.

The major problem filling a diesel car with petrol is the fuel pump as the diesel lubricates it and the petrol does not so it will get damaged and need replacing..As your car in at a main dealers my opinion is that they will replace all the fuel system that will be very expensive.

Thanks all! I've arranged for the car to be towed to a local garage so hopefully it'll be cheaper.

Hi be very careful, the garage should know but please please be aware diesel engines have been known to catch fire when the glow plugs ignites the petrol vapours when trying to start they catch fire very very quickly, and if this happens and you have miss fueled some underwriters regard this as negligence.
WE had an 18 month old Mondeo 2ltr TDI that got miss fueled and the Ford repair instructions were very plain and very short!!! ENGINE MISS FUELED? YES ENGINE STOPPED? YES ACTION REQUIRED REPLACE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM ENGINE ASSEMBLY AND EXHAUST INCLUDING ALL SENSORS!!!
We recovered the vehicle back to our depot flushed out the fuel system removed the glow plug relay and got it going. Ran another 100k without missing a beat!!
