2 weeks into my ownership of my first VW and all was going well until the PRNDS lights started flashing on the dash.

It happened just after id dropped the car into sport mode on a country lane, went to put my foot down and nothing happened. Car seemed to go into limp mode and the lights started flashing on the dash. Dropped it back into D and took it slowly down the road. slowed up for a junction and the gearbox wouldnt down shift. When I came to a stop there was a bit of a clunk as it went from 3rd, 2nd 1st. Stopped and turned off the car, locked and unlocked it, started it and off it went down the road like nothing had happened.

Has anyone else come across this before? Do I need to get it checked out? The car has 3 months warranty on it. Ive been told it can something as simple as low oil in the box or as bad as the mechatronic unit itself.

The one worry I had when I bought the car was that if there was a fault with the gearbox it was going to cost £££'s to fix..... 2 weeks in and its already playing up, I thought VAG's we're reliable!!

I should point out the vehicle has done 77k so is probably just about due its next DSG service based on the 40k service intervals.

Did it have a DSG service at 40k?

I'm unfamiliar with the symptoms of a mechantronic break down but I'd be wheeling it back to the dealer asap

Might be worth giving VW UK a call and asking if the mechatronic unit was replaced under warranty. IIRC there were quite a few of them with dodgy ones.

Mine was an 08 and had a new one under warranty.

Had the car diagnosed at the weekend, fault code 19143 - Unexpected / Implausible Mechanical Gear Disengagement

Checked the service book and it had a DSG service at 26k and the car is now at 77k so its due a service. Spoke to a VW technician and they reckon 99% of DSG issues are cured with a service and a software reset/upgrade so thats where im starting.

Fingers crossed that cures it.

How did this go?

My DSG has just had it's second service and a software re-set and it's back to being as smooth as silk.
