My parents are thinking of getting an A3 sportback. Currently they drive a Volvo C30 diesel 150 bhp and would like the same level of performance. Normally they would consider a similar engine for its replacement, however concerns over future diesel issues and the emissions of the TFSI engines make them of interest. The brochure claims a 0-60 time of 9.3 secs for the 125 TFSI Stronic, which seems adequate for their purposes. However does anyone know how it compares to the 150 TFSI and the diesel in terms of real life useful acceleration (e.g. mid range 50-70)?

Thanks

Todd

The 1.4 150 petrol is quicker than the 150 2.0 diesel in all scenarios if you use the gearbox properly, same power less weight. However, in gear times the diesel may be quicker in 50-70 for example although the 1.4 is surprisingly torquey for a small petrol.

The petrol is more refined, quieter, and handles better, whilst getting real world 45mpg. No reason to go for the diesel unless doing big miles or a lot of motorway driving where in gear acceleration is more useful.

I test drove the 122 (which became the 125) and bought the 140 (which became the 150) in an A3 Sportback S-tronic. Aside from the slight power hikes they are the same engines that you're asking about.

The 140 feels quite a bit quicker at low and mid rpm. It has more torque, 184 lb ft v 148 and you can really feel the difference in day to day driving in town, on the motorway, on B roads etc.

Aside from the extra cost (£800 ish?) there is no real penalty. According to the official mpg, the 150 is slightly more economical because of cylinder deactivation. This can cause vibration which some may notice, others may not.

I would say the 122 is fine for normal driving but if you like a bit more then you have to get the 150. We've done 15,000 miles in ours so far. We have managed 45mpg+ on a few occasions but our average is around 39...mainly because it's used around town.

Thanks for taking the time to reply and even predicting the follow up question on whether it can achieve a reasonable approximation of its official fuel consumption. I think you've answered my question pretty completely. As it's going to have the S-Tronic gearbox I guessing an extended warranty would be a good investment.
