I don't know about the Golf, but on the Astras we use in work, it only seems to kick in once you go above a certain speed. Could be talking out my arse though.

As it has come up, has anyone experienced a partial restart?

I came to a stop and the SS kicked in just as the lights turned green. At which point the engine restarted but only running on a couple of cylinders, and it didn't seem to realise that as I had a dashboard "SS unavailable, engine must be restarted manually" message. It was showing about 2-300 rpm on the tach and did not sound well. I switched the ignition off which stopped the engine, then restarted and all has been fine since. (ETA - 2010 Audi A7 3.0 TDI Quattro.)

By the time I'd done that the lights changed back to red and the vehicles behind me, whom I'd overtaken earlier, must have thought I was a total tosser! Still, that's not really relevant. Anyone else had this happen?

Well there's a surprise Audi UK have no records of any failures of SS or faults with the system ha ha Furkin ha .

The dealers can't fix mine , Audi UK can't , the big boys in Germany don't want to know either .

Mine fails to restart on occasion either doing nowt , on others cranking and not firing , the crap diagnostics do not even record an event code let alone a fault code , now really the engine cranking not firming must be recorded surely as some sort of occurrence , sat in car with tech as he plugged in etc not a dam thing

I put my arms up in apology when it happens at lights etc as people toot and hoot the Furkin Audi driver for not moving off as this pantomime takes place , me sitting there not touching anything as the engine cranks and the car behaves like a wobbly jelly .

The st fuel economy is not helped by switching the system off and frankly I don't always remember to and paying for the system I expect it to work like the wife's cheapo Honda Jizz system works , perfectly and imperceptibly day in day out .

So Dimski , don't hold yer breath you will cease to exist before Audi sort it out ! They won't admit to a problem .

On the Audi it won't kick in if the AC is on (not the air, the AC switch).

I don't see the point in it on an S model in my experience, it's now 2nd nature to switch it off when I start up.

I didn't bother VCDS'ing it, as I may use it one day...

I'm not sure about that.

I leave my AC permanently on and use the climate control to set temp. If it needs the A/C on a hot day it may keep the engine running and I'll have the little crossed out letter showing the auto start stop will not stop the engine, but if it is a cooler day and the climate isn't having to work hard then the engine will stop as normal.

I've posted several comments on this regarding the start/stop system on my March 2015 A6 2.0TDI ultra, ever since delivery we have had issues with the over aggressive nature of the system, erratic and unpredictable performance and most importantly actual system failures causing the car to shut down and need manual restarting - twice on roundabouts. These are the same types of faults as others have mentioned,

We have had the mechantronic unit and now the camshaft adjustment solenoid replaced under warranty as well as various software updates, normally such work 'cures' the problem for 3-4 weeks then it recurs, we are waiting to see if it will raise it's head again.

The Audi dealer has been excelent but there are major concerns in my view about the system and logic used and I know of at least one accident caused directly by this system in the UK.

It seems Audi have their heads in the sand on this.

AC makes no difference to ours, I think that's a red herring.
