Audi A6 Avant 3.0 tdi Multitronic
Discussion
Hi all, my first visit to this forum (normally on TVR page).
First off I have read that the tiptronic quarto is better than the 2 wheel drive multitronic, but I can not stretch to it financially.(either purchase price or mpg)
I am collecting a 2012 car on Wedenesday that is 3.0 tdi and multitronic
Is there any checks I can do about the gear box condition ?
Second would it be foolish to have the car remapped (chipped) for more power and better mpg?
I am thinking about the gearbox and the extra torque.
Cheers to anybody that takes the time to reply.

I don't think there's anything specific to check with the multitronic, but someone more informed will be better able to tell you hopefully. I'd just make sure it's had any and all services done on time. I know the S-Tronic can run into issues if not serviced correctly. We have a multitronic A6 in the family, but it's only covered 24000 miles in 4 years. Still runs as smooth as the day it came though.
As for re-mapping/chipping, the 3.0 TDI is a very tunable engine, and there shouldn't be any down sides to it.
In fact you could see slight MPG improvements, along with power, dependant on what kind of map you go for
HTH - sorry it's not more informative.

Thanks Scott.
The car I am looking at (have put deposit on)has done 78K and still drives very nicely.
I really want to unleash a bit more power, but I wondered why Audi limit the 3.0tdi to 204 ps when fitted with multitronic, but then up the output to 245 ps when mated to quarto auto box.
I don't want to break anything !

Sorry chap; we've moved office and I've been frenetic so must have missed your post.
The late multitronics are fine; oil every 40k but in the last few years reliability has been excellent. It should creep gently, pull away smoothly without lurching and 'changes' are completely seamless.
Like any auto the mapping is heavily biased to CO2 emissions but that's nothing you can't fix with manual mode.

Thanks Alex , I was worried about putting a lot of strain on a weak gearbox design.
It does creep, but not really enough for my liking.
A lot of the time you have to use throttle when maneovering, which is a little annoying as it can be a 'quick' on take up.
Perthaps its just a case of getting used to it (and stop playing with different settings)

Certainly a degree of acclimatisation, yes. The take up in a multitronic is quite 'gradual' let's say, they never feel exactly like a torque convertor. I quite like them as they suit a fairly smooth, progressive driving style.
They're never going to appeal to someone that wants whip crack responses.
