Hi,

I'm in the process of buying a new Leon from a main dealer. My preference was to order one in solid red, and at the weekend I was told that the dealer could not access the ordering system and there is a chance I would need to settle for metallic with the extra cost that entails.
Today I have been told that the only suitable car (ie without a load of expensive options neither of us want to pay for) is in silver, probably my least favourite choice colour. Reading between the lines, it seems a factory order to my spec is off the cards for what I am willing to pay.
Clearly he wants me to take an early car to conclude a deal, but I'm slightly sceptical that the only car he can get hold of is in what I, and I would assume most people perceive is the worst colour.

Does what he is saying ring true, or is supply really that limited?

Sounds like the salesman's being a bit naughty so get a quick sale. Regardless of the waiting list you should be able to order a car to your spec.

When I considered a Leon a couple of years ago the salesman was trying to push me into the dealer demo and mocked me for wanting to spend 5k more for a badge (demo was a spwcced up SE and I wanted an FR) tried to convince me his car was the same. Wasnt impressed when I listed all the differences and why I didn't want the SE

That's what I'm thinking. I'm reasonably flexible, but the goalposts appear to be moving. I suspect the end of quarter bonus is preying on his mind.

Where are you based? If you fancy a travel to Cornwall you're welcome to PM me the deal you've been offered and I'll pass it onto one of my SEAT guys to see if they can beat it and get the car you actually want?

Just let me know if you do.

That's very kind, and I'd take you up on it if you were closer.
Would you mind confirming if it is likely that the tracking system (or whatever they use to locate build slots) doesnt work on a Saturday? PM if you prefer.

thanks

I honestly don't know the answer, I have only ever sold one SEAT. I can't see why it would be closed at weekends though, it just seems stupid.

I'll ask when I can.

Sounds like nonsense to me, certainly don't be pressured into a colour or spec you don't want. My Leon was a factory order last September to our spec and took about 6 weeks from order to delivery.

I think I've heard the factory shuts down in August which may cause a delay with a factory order, but can't believe that would affect the ability to order one to your spec. Maybe try a different dealer. Just make sure you get a big discount, our dealer got within £200 of the drive the deal price.

And mine is Red, best colour!

Recent trip to Coventry Seat to replace the O/h's Ibiza.

Me: Hi. We have a 62 plate Ibiza 2.0tdi FR that we'd like to part-ex for new 1.4 petrol with the 140 engine.

Un-educated sales girl: OK. Have a seat sir. Right what car do you want?

Me: a 1.4 petrol with the 140 engine.

Bint: new or used.

Me: er, new, and not the Black version as that has hardly any options available.

Bint: they don't make a 1.4 turbo engine in that car. I drive a 1.2, it's great. Do you want a 1.2?

Me: er no. But they do make the 1.4 in FR trim as I requested. It's in the current brochure, and on the website.

Bint: the 1.2 is great (walks off to talk to manager and returns). They don't make that engine anymore.

Me: why not? It hasn't been out long.

Bint: we have a 1.4 turbo black as a demo do you want that.

Me : we don't want the black. It has no optionss.

Bint: how about the 1.2. It's a great engine.

Me: no an FR 1.4 turbo is our choice thanks.

Bint: you can't get an FR now. There's no more left. The new Ibiza is out soon.

Me: oh right. Can we place an order for the new on ethen please?

Bint: i guess so, but you can't have the 1.4 turbo.

Me: ok, what can I get then

Bint: don't know, but we can put you on the list.

Me: Thanks. Bye

And if you thought reading that was tedious, try being there. The joys of being in a Seat showroom.

When I was looking at buying a Leon Cupra last month I was told factory orders aren't a problem but I would be looking at a 6 month wait for delivery.

Having contacted a few other dealers, it does appear that the spec I'm after isnt commonly built by dealers, and a current factory order is 3/4 months.
Given all that the silver car doesnt seem such a bad option. Quite why my dealer just couldnt have told me this upfront I dont know. It does feel a bit like buying a car in the 1980s.

We bought a new 1.4 ST FR late last year as a factory order, took around 3 months. My advice would be to price the car up using drivethedeal.com, print it out (screenshot and print the image as they somehow stop you printing it directly) and take it to your local dealer and ask them to match it. If they can't get near it go elsewhere until you find one that can.

Don't be persuaded into a stock or pre-specced dealer car unless its a) close to what you want, and b) significantly cheaper. About the only big advantage of buying new is the opportunity to get exactly the car you want, don't be persuaded into a compromise unless you're really desperate for a car immediately as you'll only regret it. We still got £3500 off the price so don't think that decent discounts are only available on cars already in the pipeline.

Sounds like a right barrel of laughs buying a Seat.

I'm having a similar situation trying to get someone to supply and fit an Amtico floor in my house. You'd have thought the scenario was simple; I give you lots of money and in return I get what I want. Never seems to be so simple.

My dealer (who I did a 7 hour round trip to collect the car from) is ace... I even managed to order while in Romania haha, Literally messaged him and said I want a MK3 Cupra 280 SC with these options. it was a factory build and took about 3-4 months.

OP where are you based?

My dealer was excellent (Aldershot), as was another I used for a test drive (Reading). A third was absolutely useless.

It was actually a refreshing experience compared to Audi and VW dealers I have dealt with in the past. No flashy showroom, reception girls, or fancy coffee. Just a low key environment and a very helpful salesman who updated me throughout the process.

Stick with it I can't see them turning down a sale for that, we picked ours up on a Saturday from Snows in Portsmouth no problems. Just tell them you're not fussed with any fanfare or an hour of blurb with a clueless salesman guessing their way through a tutorial trying to pretend they know how to work a sat nav etc, just want to turn up and take the keys!

I had the same with Sinclair VW recently, wouldn't do a Sunday handover but happy to pay a delivery company to drive it 150 miles to me on a weekday!
