Well... a remap will be best bang for buck. If you go to rtech or other custom map then they will be able to put on a map that wont destroy your clutch (presume you are manual not DSG)

Handling wise, a rear anti-roll-bar is a good first mod as it reduces understeer quite a bit.

Stage 1 remap, personally I'd go R-Tech
Rear ARB
Anti-lift kit

Personally I would spend the grand on getting the handling back up to scratch with fresh bushes (or anti-lift bush kit) and dampers etc first.

Adding more power to an ageing chassis makes it erm, interesting, to say the least.

I concur. Goes without saying, but get a proper geometry set up on a Hunter machine too.

Or on a more radical move. Assess if you really require the practicality of a hatchback. If the answer is 'no', then sell the Golf and invest the money + the £1000 budget into a more performance orientated car.

Obviously if the answer is 'yes', then this might not be a viable option.

I'm a fan of Koni FSDs and Eibach Pros for street use on the Mk5 platform. Add to that bushes and ARB and you've got a fantastic road biased setup. Think that's probably pushing the budget slightly unless you get lucky with discounts and do the fitting yourself though.
