Hi All,

I am looking at above. I have a budget of approx 60k. The M6 is hugely specced and looks fab both in and out in the coupe form.

The Audi is Quattro which means it has great grip all year round and will be rapid off the line. It has more space which will be good with the 3 and 7 year old kids. The estate form is less attractive to me.

I currently have a S5 so the coupe is definitely working well.

My concern is of course depreciation and handling. The M6 is more than halved in 3 years i.e. 2012 is sub 50k. The Audi is sitting at £60-65k for a year old car.

Also I don't particularly want a lively car, i.e. back end slipping out when pushed a bit. I do want something rapid and something with character i.e. a lovely V8 rumble.

What would you gents go for if you were me?

Thanks,
LP

Have you considered the RS7 as an alternative to the RS6? It has a similar spec and size to the RS6, but in a more coupe-like package that you might find more visually pleasing.

The RS7 and the M6 are both Marmite cars but the Audi's residuals are massive compared to the Beemer's.

I'm not sure about the looks of the RS7 and really don't like the M6. Both are starship performance though.

Would an S6 saloon scratch your itch?

I have never owned a 4 door car! I am 35 and its always been 2 or 3 doors. I prefer the way they look.

Interesting you gents mention the RS7. I only recently considered it. Not sure about the way it looks from the back. Its like the back end has been squashed down.

I also considered the Bentley GT. Its 4 wheel drive and rapid but I don't think I could afford to maintain it.. also the interior is looking dated on the 2010 year.

I think you are right. BMW lose a lot of money! I keep going round in circles!

Not thought about the S6 tbh. I did look at the S8 on Autotrader this morning. They are very lush. I do like it smile

RS6 would be my choice for the looks and AWD. I suspect having not driven an RS6 that the M6 may be the better handler but regardless it would be RS6 for me. The RS7 is rarer more expensive and not the best looker.

£60k will get you a new S8 at discount. 2 year old under £50k.

On 21s for summer and 19s for winter the suspension is just perfect in all three modes for UK roads IMHO.

I personally wouldn't drive an estate car unless I really needed to drive an estate car, regardless of whether it's an RS6 or not.

This is what I would go for. It's a huge amount of car for the money. An S8 for £58K.

If you're worried about maintenance costs on a Bentley, then you should also worry about the same costs on an RS or M car. Big bills come with the territory.

The S8 is an interesting proposal, but it's a size class bigger than the RS6/7 and M6, and is quite decidedly a saloon car. I don't see it as being an alternative to those others.

A6, A7 and A8 driven on same day as I was cross shopping them. The difference in how they drive was related more to spec than anything else I could tell regarding size or class of car. I preferred the A8 for value, spec, suspension, engines from the 3.0 TDI (250) to the 4.0 TFSI (520) and ended up owning both.

I spotted this one yesterday which looked exceptional value. Its place in Amersham Bucks a I nearly bought a Merc from at Christmas time. I don't really know them well, but found them very particular indeed.

Never had an S8, but had an A8 for yers which was simply fantastic

Did I read that right? You have two A8's?

Back on topic, I very nearly went for an M6GC, fantastic car but the traction is an issue in anything but dry conditions and given my rural location I ruled it out. Audi gave me the keys to an RS6 for a weekend and I liked it but in the end decided the RS4 was quick enough, big enough and far more fun. Eight months in and I have no regrets, I have owned plenty of exotic cars, but the understated looks combined with performance that is more than adequate, handling, ride and all round package is hard to beat. The only downside is the steering, but it is an Audi.

M all day long unless you need a van & then the RS6. How about the M6GC?

As regards depreciation, the Audi RS's & M's are aligned, however BMW took the decision to offer discounts & attractive lease/contract hire deals early in the M5/6's lifecycle, however Audi only did this late last year, so %age loss based on new (actual) OTR cost is virtually identical.

RS has a slight advantage off the line in lesser weather conditions, but it's marginal.

That said, any car in that genre is going to be a good purchase as they all offer satisfaction, but delivered in slightly different ways. The RS7 I tend to agree is not really a looker.

Car on my radar is the incoming S8+. Fastest non R that Audi produce.

Would it be worth waiting for the new RS5, probably due next year?

Similar position to the OP... went from a 2-seater (Aston V8V) and needed an estate to cart everything around in... Went for the RS6 and am not disappointed. It is an epic car: understated but incredibly fast and surprisingly drivable for a 2tonne + car

How are you finding the shift from the AM coupe to a estate. It's a huge difference in looks.

How are you coping with the move from a coupe to a estate?!

RS6 - everything you need in one car.
Or, if budget allows, a M6 and a RS4 for the dog.
