I have been thinking about getting something a bit bigger and more comfortable for a while and like the look of the A5. It would need to be a 5 door so I can get my son in and out the back.

Is there anything to look out for on these in particular? Will be looking for a Diesel 2.0/2.7/3.0 (depending on what is about). Theres seems to be a lot that are a few years old with less than 50K miles on for £15-£20K.

If you can stretch to it get a quattro, they really do drive a lot better, or if not get the 1.8T or lower power 2.0tdi. The 2.0T is a great engine but overwhelms the front wheels even when not really pushing it due to the 258lbft torque, its a real pig in the wet especially pulling out of junctions etc, believe me, I've had both. So best choices, either a 2.0T Quattro or a 3.0Tdi Quattro. Best options are the hard disk Navigation and B&O sound system. Theres also a lower spec DVD Nav which is a bit naff, the hard disk one has a little joystick type thing on top of the MMi control which the DVD doesnt.

Don't be under the impression that the non-quattro cars aren't worth bothering with, the quattros are less efficient which I presume matters to you by the fact you want a diesel. Tyre choice can help reduce wheel spin also, I found the Contis I had on previously were really bad for grip.

The boot is a decent size but there isn't much leg room in the back so you need to try before you buy.

I agree that the B&O is worth having.

Sold mine as the interior wouldn't stop rattling. Not the best ccar I've had by a country mile. They've gone downhill on quality and materials. My XF leaves it standing in so many ways.

Had an A5 Sportback for a few year 2.0 TDi. The conti's are soft tyres so you do get through them quickly. I had the 19inch segment alloys and the ride was firm but never bothered my wife or 3 yr old. B&O is worth while as us the s line trim, just looks miles better. Your budget will easily stretch to a facelift version. Great cars so I'd recommend them.

I rather like them but have never been convinced by four door. If I needed flexibility I'd buy something else.

Yes, an A4 saloon is cheaper car for car if the styling does it for you.

The gem in the range is the 3.0TDI quattro.

You'll want 19s, heated seats, bluetooth and preferably HDD nav (sometimes referred to as 'nav plus', MMI 3G+ or tech pack high).

Hold in mind that a (very tiny) middle rear seat is an option on facelift cars and all pre-facelift are 4 seaters.

I've a facelift coupe and I'll second all this barring the wheels - 19" looks better but the ride is more forgiving on 18". The 3.0TDi is pretty efficient too - I get ~44mpg on my urban/rural/hilly run to work and >55mpg on decent motorway runs.

make sure it has cruise - oddly optional but easy to retrofit. Heated seats are just cloud9 in winter. The B&O system is very good too, worth it if you can as some poor sod paid the bulk of the depreciation on it and it's a pricey option.

Agreed - they drive best on 18s but the Sportback really does look under-wheeled on them (to my eye).
