Bought a Polo 1.2, 2004, 107k miles and in nice condition. Previous owner was using it until a couple of days ago at which point it started running rough and then once stopped wouldn't start.

I got it cheap so figured it was worth taking a chance and as my Son will be 17 soon it is to be his first car once he's passed his test.

Anyway, engine turns over nicely but it won't fire. I'm assuming compression is good as it makes the right noises, so it is missing either spark or fuel (or both).

Before I start delving in, are there there any 'known' faults (fuel pump, relay etc.) for this model that I should know about that might save me some time/money in diagnosing?

TIA. thumbup

Had a quick look today and found a blown fuse; no. 37 (15A) titled 'ignition electrics' in the handbook. Replaced this and it popped as soon as ignition switched on.

A quick search tells me this is for the ignition transformer and should be 15A for the standard car or 20A for FSI, out of curiosity I put in a 20A and the car started, ran a few seconds before blowing the fuse again.

Assuming the fuse only powers the transformer then it appears to be faulty, any tips or ideas?

Ignition units seems to go a lot on these, I assume it'll be a nasty piece of Italian/French manufacturing as per most VAG stuff from that era (have a look)

Well, a quick search shows that a new ignition transformer can be had for £20 - just need to confirm this is the fault. thumbup

Timing chain is very common on these too and have a similar presentation to what you have described, especially given the age and mileage. I had one before I got my audi with similar situation. hope helps

Thanks, had heard this and when I bought it I had suspicions that it could be this but since it's running fine, we're safe (for now anyway).

As for the condition, It's been serviced every year, interior is spotless, has 4 new tyres and apart from a small ding in one of the rear doors is in excellent shape.

My Son's got it for when he's passed his test and at £200 (+ £30 for a coil), we don't need to be precious about it and I'm sure I wouldn't be out of pocket even if I have to break/scrap it... thumbup
