the current deal is still live, it's just that you won't get a car registered in time before it ends. All cars need to be registered by end of Q2, and it's unlikely they'll run a parallel deal with a later end date. You probs won't see anything till July at the absolute earliest, but tbh it's prob gone for good now. It's not a volume car. Best thing you can do is loiter in the best lease deals thread and jump on something good when it comes up, rather than focus on a particular model. Good luck!
Any further progress on your order via the app?

Mine is still sitting at order received. Im becoming increasingly impatient and beginning to ponder adding options / changing colour again!

Whats your spec choice if you don't mind me asking?
mine has moved into 'preparation' but it's been there for about a week now! I thought if you changed things it can kick you back in the build queue a bit? That's what I was told anyway. Mine's moonlight blue with walnut leather. The dealer thought that was a completely batst colour combo and tried to talk me out of it, then why I told them to shoosh they tried to whack me with an additional £5k (yep) holding deposit!! They got short shrift and backed down when I threatened to pull out of the whole thing although I was surprised they didn't just let me walk.

That sounds like they were trying to pull a fast one on you.

I've went very plain and stealth with Mythos Black, Black Leather, Black Alcantara and tinted windows! Lol.

I won't change or add anything else for fear of it delaying things. Just need to be patient for a little while longer

Driving them on a public road makes the comparison not so clear cut, especially in the congested southeast. I know if I got them on a track, the M5 would be a hoot and the S8 would feel safe. The other thing is with only a few hundred miles under my belt, I haven't yet plucked up the courage to switch the ESP off. In the M5 I used to automatically reach for MDM whenever I started the car, unless it was raining.

Handling is subjective. We can break it down into balance and progression, steering feel, accuracy/directness, grip, suppleness (which is not strictly a handling trait). That may help to clarify. I personally prefer a two tonne limousine to have a tendency to understeer - not everyone is the same.

Balance: no question the S8 feels more front heavy and this translates into understeer when provoking the car in a tight corner. In an odd way, it feels momentarily like a giant version of my integrale which is no bad thing. Not (obviously) the steering feel which is untouchable on the 'grale, but in the way chucking it hard at a corner and getting back on the throttle gets the front wheels to scrub and then all four wheels to grip and go. I must try that again with the ESP off and see how close that analogy really is. The Beemer is a lot more traditional front engine, rear wheel drive in the way it does its business and the throttle has to be treated more sensitively. It also makes the power less usable especially in the wet.

Steering feel: Audi 0 BMW 0. No score draw. The curse of modern cars. That said, there's this non-linearity I mentioned in the Audi which I'm struggling to understand so there's still a chance for an own goal. Jury's out. Accuracy/directness: the M5 has a slightly sharper helm (I don't personally thinks it's as extreme a difference as the journalists seem to imply, at least not on the road) but as I mentioned before the Audi's non-linearity sometimes makes me take two bites at a corner in the Audi. I may eventually learn to recognise this and adapt my driving.

Grip: the BMW came on MPSS, the Audi on Goodyear Eagles. Can't say I can tell the difference. Traction seems to be more of a differentiator than grip. In the depths of winter I was driving Miss Daisy in the M5, I think I can afford to be a bit less inhibited in the Audi.

Suppleness: along with traction I think this is the other plus point for the Audi. The M5 wasn't bad at all, but the Audi has a lovely suspension. It breathes with the road even on the moon craters of Surrey. A material difference in making progress.

Hope that helps.
Harris,

This really is an excellent reply, you should write for one of the mags! Disappointed now I missed the S8 deals, I could probably settle for one over an M5. I loved the feel and handling of that car so much, the DSG box and power were addictive and I wonder if I could ever enjoys any other big sedan as much. Our current V8 diesel A8 is fun but nothing close to the M5 so I do wonder how much of that gap the S8 can bridge.

Thanks for taking the time to write such a comprehensive reply.

cheers,
Simon

Anyone else noticed that paint is very thin and prone to scratches easily? Car is in Havana Black and I'm finding new scratches almost every day. Touching the paint can cause scratches. Of course they can be polished off with proper kit but it's annoying. I park car at work and at home away from other cars, no one is walking past it, so I'm not sure where these scratches are coming from. Never had issues like this on my previous cars. I would be very unhappy if it was my car, not leased. I'm considering visiting dealer to discuss it when I have more time.

I never had black car, so maybe it's normal? Had navy blue with soft paint before, front looked like someone shoot at it from machine gun (frequent high speed driving in Germany) but no scratches.

Murder! Mine still hasn't moved from the welcome screen. Surely they have to make a move soon if they've to be registered before the end of June!

Takes about 4 weeks from build to arrival at dealers, no?

6 months wait from order to delivery for an Audi is unreal. Its not a ferrarri for Gods sake frown

See this has been worrying me also. I've ordered Mythos Black and whilst I swore i'd never get another Black car, i just don't like most of the other colour options bar perhaps Moonlight Blue.

Darker shades seem to suit the S8 better given it's size. Some of the exclusive colours are nice but I'm not paying a £1500 premium on a lease car. I would have chosen Sepang Blue if that was an option.

I generally get my detailer to do my cars and was considering a ceramic coating to help protect from small scratches and swirls but at £500 its a big expense also for a lease car.

I'll probably go for a lesser spec protection for half the price and take car whilst washing. I do hope I don't live to regret going with Black again!

Sympathies, I know exactly what you mean re paint! I was shocked at how eash one could scratch a carbon black M3. With my finger! It's not on at all.

Paying for special paint of pain protection on lease car is money down the drain. I'm going to get polisher in next few weeks and do a bit of detailing myself and see if it improves things. It would be huge disappointment if I was going to keep the car for couple of years.

BTW, on last year deal, someone got their car delivered 3 months later and he still got the agreed price, however had to fight for it as dealer wanted to charge him more. So if someone's car is delayed, VWFS should honour the deal, after all it's not customer fault.

eek, bit of a worry... it takes an estimated 2-4 weeks from the build week for it to arrive, but mine is into step 4 "panel shop" now, whatever that means, and it wasn't due to start until w/c 30 may. Don't really get it. Not sure the online tracker really adds anything other than it's just something i now feel i need to log into twice a day!! Only needs to be UK for it to be registered, although every day after it's registered that it isn't on your driveway is a day less that you'll have it for in the end. If they do end up doing something hooky to get it registered in june then make sure you get some money back off them.

Yeah i log on a few times per day myself. Im hoping its going to move within the next week which should mean i get it for late June. The wait is torture now. I managed to foget about it for a few months but its at the forefront of my mind again! Lol

Glad yours is moving though, just home mine does the same soon too.

hope it does too, good luck with it... not sure this is going to make you feel any better but i think you must be one of the last ones in the deal... think mine took 19 days (looking back at this thread) for it to move from "preparation" to "panel shop". You should be able to get a build week from the broker? They'll just ask the dealer but it should all be on-screen. If it looks like there's going to be an issue then you need to know now and they need to get their fingers out their arses and come up with and share their plan to resolve it!!

No that's ok, knowledge is useful. I'm in direct communication with the supplying dealer and we have been emailing back and forth now and again.

My order has a June delivery but I'm going to drop the dealer an email just now. I jumped on the deal quite quickly I thought and I was the second to place my order of 5 allocated cars the broker had and he was the first as he took one himself.

I've had the app live for a few months now and it hasn't shifted. Bugger!

that video is kind of hilarious... i bet they must have paid a lot of money for the uber-cheese american movie voice-over man! The 80s style yank rock backing track maybe not so much. Don't forget - "the S stands for Sport"!

Haha, can't even watch that.

Emailed both dealer and lease company today with no response from either!

I'll just try and remain patient.
