well fair enough but if it went to one place and didn't sell, and then appeared at another place then it probably went for a second time to auction and was sold for a lot less than the first time.

Why do you think it went to more than one place? My reading is that it was bought at auction by a trader who initially listed it at £38.5 before dropping it to £34.5...

From the cars I've seen so far that are ex-lease it would appear most people didn't bother with things like night vision, cooled seats etc. I can see the reasoning but it does make life difficult for someone like me who wants all these things, I know some may consider them a waste but in a car of this class they seem to be essential to people like me trying to scoop up a top spec car.

Any extra would be expensive on lease. I only took some cheap options, because deal was so good. You would have to find one that was "bought" privately. There are some with a bit more options but they are also more expensive.

Night vision is probably very rare option in UK, it seems to be more popular in USA. Cooled seats or HUD could be easier to find.

Indeed I can see the logic in doing it,I have seen one with literally everything on it. It's a 2012 but the mileage is 50K a bit more than I'd be happy with.
Not in any great hurry as the Phaeton is still running well.

in all honesty I looked through the options list, as I do if I am getting a lease (which I don't always do), and nothing really jumped out at me as suitable. I wouldn't consider getting an option under those circumstances that is greater than say £700, and nearly all of them are on that car. The standard spec is fairly basic (as you'll know) for that market segment, but it does have some good stuff like very adjustable seats, nice leather and matrix headlights (the LED indicators don't get me excited any more as even Peugeot's have them - oh the shame!), but TBH you won't give a st really as the party piece is the physics defying way it propels itself.

I totally agree about the performance which is it's USP, when I drove one it certainly impressed me particularly the way it just launches itself off the mark without any faffing around. I also liked the way you could tailor the car to your requirements although I didn't have time to play. It seemed a lot faster than my CL and of course didn't do any sideways party tricks.
I want one as my daily so I'm used to all the things my previous cars have had and won't compromise as I normally keep my daily for a good five years.

Which is why I think its daft that they make the leaser pay for the options in full. These cars would probably be worth more money and sell more easily with the so called "must haves" on them. Can't imagine many people looking for a bog standard S8!

It does seem strange but as mentioned above it's the very dynamics of driving the car that's it USP without doubt having driven one. That said I'm thinking positively and hoping the flood of low spec ex-lease cars will influence the secondhand market price allowing someone like me to pick one up at what I consider very little money for what you get.

Its a USP of the S8 vs the A8, but driving dynamics alone you wouldn't be looking at an S8 or an A8. The S8 "should" be luxurious with driving dynamics IMO

I'm confused why the S8 is deemed to be low spec in standard guise? I only needed to add a tow bar on mine. Everything else optional just seems pointless to me. What am I missing out on?

Night vision and cooled seats were mentioned. I am only making the observations that these S8s don't seem to be moving very quickly, and that the spec might be the issue.

If I had been leasing one it would have been bog standard, but I'd imagine most A8/S8 buyers do go into the options list somewhat given the nature of the car.

To add some examples that might be expected in limo:
-heated and cooled seats at the back, cooled at the front, possibly massage option.
-4 zone air con
-soft door close
-heated steering wheel

That's just a few that come to mind. I mostly drive alone so didn't care about comfort of back seat passengers but ordered ventilated front seats and heated wheel. I've seen Birma's current daily driver and it's very nicely specced.

I'm sure ex-lease cars will take price down of better specced cars. Only problem is, there's not a lot of them. I'm aware of nicely loaded S8 that was ordered and delivered at the same time as mine, and someone paid £10K upfront and then £800 pcm. PCP with £10K options. It was similar with Mercedes SLK, most cars were ex-lease diesels will almost no options and only a few better specced cars bought privately.

BTW, standard A8 is poorly specced comparing to S8. Obiviously D4 got quite a few bits as standard over time, but new D5 is stripped down, except some electronic gadgets like HUD, virtual cockpit, etc.

it's no better specced than a S-line with a couple of options really. It isn't bad, but isn't equally quite at the level I'd expect an £82k car to be. Leather heated electric seats, extended-ish leather, alcantara headlining, matrix headlights, folding mirrors, power bootlid... not much else.
