Following this with interest.

I have a DSG R which is going back in May, and Im planning on buying my next one and I want a fast estate.

On the list I have

R Estate
B8.5 S4 Avant
B8 RS4 Avant

common sense tells me to go for the S4, Massive tuning capability and really nice car if you can find one with the extras (Supersports Seats / Drive Select etc) and a low mileage minter can be had for < 25k

But my heart says... RS4

I need to drive both properly but I keep being told the RS4 dosen`t feel any faster than my R - but the noise is better.
Had an S4.....great, impressive, respected it a lot. Didn't love it. Now have a B8 RS4; totally different beast love it. high-revving NA V8; what's not to love? Have test driven a few R's - impressive but a bit soulless. V8 before they're banned / taxed out of existence.

I spent a day in the peaks with me in the rs4 and brother in his s4. The difference in straight line speed between them isn't massive. The difference dynamically is huge.
IMO, the s4 is a very fast a4. The rs4 is a totally different beast, that looks like an a4. You can make the newer s4's as fast / faster than the RS, but unless you add big brakes and more importantly the DRS suspension, your rapid s4 would still just be a very fast a4.
Said brother has since sold his s4, and is now on the hunt for a good RS...

As long as you don't mind the extra running costs on the RS4 it would be a no-brainer for me. You're getting a proper estate there which is also a really good looking think, IMO of course.

Do love the new Golf Rs in hatch form but saw an estate for the first time in public the other day and really wasn't keen. Plus, you won't have the same amount of space inside and in the boot. If you get an estate you might aswell do it properly.

I can't help but feel if you got the Golf you'd really regret not getting the Audi. I know that's how i'd feel every time.

"Proper estate"

...with a boot under 500 litres.

(hint: the Golf's boot is quite a bit bigger)

Yep, the Golf estate is vast. Boot capacity is 605L, versus 490L in the RS4.

Didn't realise tbh. Either way would still be the RS4 for me everything else considered.

They're relatively rare but I suspect an S4 with dynamic suspension and ADS like mine would close that dynamic difference a fair amount. I've not driven an S4 without it or an RS4 for that matter so not claiming to be an authority on this, but you can really feel the torque vectoring diff doing its thing when pushing on in the twisties, it makes the car feel surprisingly agile and it pretty much refuses to understeer which was a pleasant surprise having expected it to be a little more barge like compared to my old BMW 130i with Birds/M3 suspension. Not saying it's the equal of the RS4 but it's a very nice steer with those options on board. I've also read that the RS4 even in comfort mode is a bit stiff for many, wheras the S4 in comfort has pretty supple suspension which does indeed convert it into a normal family runabout that's much more suitable for 95% of driving when the road / weather / mood / passenger count dictates going more sedately.

Just ordered the R estate. Got a great deal for a new one with all the bells and whistles that will make it a great load lugger plus fun car to drive. Price was definitely a factor as I looked at A4/A6 estates too but these would have been diesels. So by paying less I chose many options to make the car very comfortable on long journeys and have some fun with a 4x4 petrol.
You pay your money and make yer choice!!
