Calling DrG.....R8 r tronic issue....please help doc!
Discussion
Hi
I'm hoping DrG can assist a friend of mine who has a V10 r tronic spyder
The car is a 10 reg and he's recently started to experience a gearbox fault
In a nutshell, it goes something like this....
When he approaches traffic lights the car does not gear down.regardless of whether in M or auto mode....it then goes into neutral and will not engage gear again, until the 30amp fuse that corresponds to the hydraulic pump is replaced
He has had the car on a diagnostic machine and it seems to come back as a problem in respect of the hydraulic pump.....the fuse that corresponds to the hydraulic pump keeps blowing and when replaced all is well until it blows again
Sorry if this is all a little vague but this is the best description I've managed to muster from his panicky texts!
He's not a forum member so I thought I'd try and get some advice before he gets his house remortgaged for the audi dealership charge!
Many thanks in advance to anyone who can assist him!

This is a phrase that makes me laugh. He's bought an R8! It's a 500+ BHP V10 Supercar. Of course parts will be expensive! I'd actually go so far as tyo sugest that the parts will be more expensive than the labour to fit. On a related note, I imagine that your local Ford dealer charge very similar rates to the Audi place. (That surprised me years ago!)Anyway, why are the people who told him the pump are knackered not replacing it? If they think it's at fault and it certainly sounds plausible.
Although I have no experience with R-Tronic, I believe it is the same fundamental system as used by Ferrari/Maserati, made by Magneti Marelli.
The pump pressurises a hydraulic system which controls the clutch and gearchanges. If the pump fuse is blowing then the pump will stop working, hydraulic pressure will be lost and the gearbox will cease to function.
A common problem with early Ferrari/Maserati cars is for the relay that controls the pump to stick shut. This causes the pump to overrun and either damages the pump or blows the fuse. Another common problem is for the pump to simply wear out.
In any case, your friend should get the car to a tech who has experience with these systems. It is not a cheap exercise to fix a problem like this by throwing parts at it.

It is indeed made by MM and it would be reasonable to assume that it's an evolution/version of the same system.Sorry, that's not a problem I've ever come across on one of these. May well be worth a search on R8 Talk to see if anyone has experienced a similar issue but the cheapest way to fix a problem like this is definitely going to be to get a proper diagnosis done first time round.
