Hi,

We are due our first baby in April and I want to get the windows tinted in my b8 s4. Have any fellow pistonhesds had decent OEM style window tints fitted?

P.S I really hate those baby window blinds hence I want to take the window tint route instead.

P.P.S If you have any pics of your cars tinted that would help me decide what shade to go for.

Thanks

I had my M3 done in very dark (like limo tint) but its a coupe and they are small windows. Worked for my nipper though.

I think it cost about £80..

The OEM tints are in the glass.

The Aftermarket stuff is an applied film.

My local indy Audi specialist has a tie in with a window tinting outfit - they do all the interior stripping out ready for the tints to be done, so no trim gets damaged. Basically to get factory effect you only need a very light tint. They have samples of clear glass with the different tint levels applied which you can hold up on the car to see how dark it looks.

Factory glass is surprisingly dark already so doesn't need much added.

I had similar concerns when our sprog was little but managed with some tacky Halfords tinted film you could roll onto the glass yourself and take off in winter. Lasted a couple of summers before i chucked it away

I know you said you hate the baby blinds but tints always look a bit odd to me when they are only on the back. So when I brought a family barge I got some fitted blinds. They clip into the window opening on the sides and back and even allow the windows to be opened when fitted. I think they were from blinds4cars or something like that. They worked out a lot cheaper than getting tints fitted at the time.

I have a b8 rs4 with factory tints on rear and aftermarket on fronts done by Curtis at Pentagon London - near Barnet, top bloke who always does a perfect job. Done 4 or 5 cars for me in the past. The fronts were 80 quid no idea what the rest would be. Having lived in the Middle East I know that the quality of the film is what cost the money, the film doesn't just cut the light it's also the uv rays and the heat gain reduction that you need to check

Photos of rs4 on request 😜

No matter what anyone tells you you won't get a factory finish on windows with heating elements or borders.

The little bobbles on the glass where the borders diffuse trap air and create a silvery line around the glass. Some fitters are better than others (I've used Pentagon and they are v good) but it won't ever be factory. I got a really good finish on a frameless door once. Still, better than nothing though as I agree they are very handy with small kids. You might still need the blinds but at least the tints make it look tidy.

My OH loved the privacy for breastfeeding and changing too...

+1 on that.

My impending RS6 has rear tints and i hate the way it makes cars look like vans! Ideally i want the fronts to match the same hue and look factory (appreciate fronts can't be as dark as the back).

I always thought that legally no extra tint could be added to the fronts as they are as dark as they can be from the factory. Darker backs and standard fronts does look rubbish though.

Sounds like any tint you could legally add would be pointless.

Had the fronts and rears done on our A3 Sportback. Went for oem colour on the backs and a very light on the 2 fronts that is hardly noticeable. Cost £100 all together and looks good, the back window isn't perfect as suggested but you would have to look hard to notice. The rest you cant tell has been done.
Will post up some pics tomorrow.
Not the best light for pics so hope you can see the difference.
