Folks,

New VW Golf R, arrived on the 1st, only my second day of driving it, less than 600 miles on the clock (it was driven to be delivered)

Pulled in for fuel, locked the car to go into pay, returned to the car, unlocked, started the car, the 'infotainment' system screen was black. Oddly the touch screen function still worked, (its the standard fit system) I was on the radio setting, and pressed the screen where what should be station selection, and it changed station, so it was just the display that was black.

Returned to the car 5 hours later, and is working fine. Have booked in the VW, but assuming now its working again they wont find anything, will see if it happens again.

Had a 2014 GTD with a similar system (although possibly a generation earlier, due to colour display etc) and never a problem in 18 months,

Anyone had anything similar?

Cheers, Beanie

Having similar problems with my Passat , which I presume uses all of the same basic system , certainly the same in a Tiguan I had as a courtesy car . The other car I had as a loaner was an UP so some what basic .

Any way my car has suffered from blank screen , occasional no sound , and quite often mid call the blue tooth drops out ( they just blamed my phone , but it never was problem in previous A4 and other cars I have linked to, new sim on way now just in case )

First they had car for 2 days did nowt , then luckily was driving past , screen went blank , shot in and dragged the service manager out as car idled in car park , photos taken etc , then he did the classic , turned of , shut and locked doors and opened again , WOW cure , re I think not , so they had car again and did software updates for known Bluetooth problems and fitted new touch screen . So far Bluetooth just as bad , touch screen seems to have stayed active , although occasionally have to turn off the infotainment and on again to get sound back . They did seem to also cure the problem with the Alarm going of randomly another known software problem and the "brake switch" changed which has cured the brake. Fault light , Basically poor electronics ! Can't wait for VAG driverless cars !

Going back next week about Bluetooth and now annoying rattles around 1850rpm

But it's the old can't see the problem can't fix it sorry , go away you must be a liar !

By the way car now done just over 7000 miles , also odd suspicion clutch might have a problem , twice had nice smell and a screeching type noise as it engages when pushing hard , never worn a clutch out before , with up to 200000 mile on one , and 80000 miles on a sports car that's been driven like it. Was stolen for 15 years .

Seems to be quite common over on the R forum with the new headunits.

I've had issues with the one on my GTD recently. Screen comes on but is unresponsive and unable to use the Radio or Nav functions. Seems to fix itself after a few minutes driving though.

You have to bear in mind that all infotainment systems are in effect computers and as such, they can throw a wobbly. Provided it doesn't happen all the time, I wouldn't be worried.

So.thats it then Mr Barry , put up with sub standard goods because they are a touch complicated and don't work properly , I think not !

My TV , my lap top my I pad seem to work with out all off these glitches so why not a £28k car !

So when you get ur driverless car and it try's to go up a lamp post or mows down a queue at a bus stop you won't mind then

Mr Barry, on a car that's 5 days old, I don't think 'computer glitch' quite makes it ok! As already started, ive got a phone, computer, tablet, that are fractions of the cost, and no problems at all! And to be honest, that's all it is, a tablet!

AGK, could you link me to the forum suggested? I'm not sure where u mean?

This has occurred several times on my Passat R Line, which was delivered mid-December. For me, switching off and locking the car, then unlocking and starting brought the screen back to life.

Googling "VW infotainment blank screen" suggests that it is fairly common, with no software updates being mentioned as providing a fix.

Pressing and holding the on/off switch for approx 15 seconds is mentioned as a work-around. I will give that a go next time it happens - and it undoubtedly will.

This is why smartphones have cameras that take videos. Record every fault so when they say can't see the fault you can show them the video, if they want a copy they can get it from youtube.

I had this issue on my 2016 MY Golf GTI, built in July 15 with the newer MIB II system. Standard discovery nav, not the bigger screened pro nav one.

Mine initially had a couple of blank screens but would work after a couple of minutes. However 1 month into ownership it completely died and got stuck in a re-boot cycle. My unit was replaced under warranty as it would not turn on long enough for them to diagnose the issue!

Since the new unit, had one or two minor Apple Car Play related issues but holding down the power button for 10s restarts it and everything works again. The other day I couldn't change driving mode (stuck on standard; no sport, economy etc.) Keeping a close eye on it for now...

The blank screen issue happened again yesterday evening. I started the car and drove off with the DAB radio warbling away, only to notice after a minute or so that the screen was blank.

Pressing and holding the on/off button for just over 10 seconds reset the system and the screen sprung into life.

Hi, Picking this thread up. My GTD had the black screen issue from new Nov 2015. I was told there was a software update. They ordered in an SD card and reprogrammed the systems. All seemed well.

Then on a long run the Nav screen froze, but the Nav system was still working on the driver information panel and along the top of the Info screen the time to destination etc were still correct. Car goes back to dealer. VW tells the dealer it needs a complete reset to make sure the update has worked. Two weeks later it has done the same thing again. Although this time the screen wandered off to Florida first (rather than the A1 Hatfield where it was supposed to be), again the Nav system was still working in the background. The buttons down the side work but the touch screen is not responding, also the the proximity sensitive menu along the bottom sticks on. The traffic alerts come on screen but you can't cancel them.

There are various other symptoms. At the end of the journey the reversing screen came on automatically. and I could then select destinations on the touch screen and change radio channels, but the Nav screen itself was still jammed and jerking around somewhere over the USA although the Nav system would now take a route etc. I have managed to take some video and lots of photos of what's operational and not operational when stationary.

I will be returning to the dealer this week to work a plan for what they are going to do next. I was told last time that if the reset didn't work they may have to order in a new head unit and these are on a long back order already. So it sounds like lots of people are having issues.

Apologies for the long post but I hope some of this is useful for others trying to pin down the issues.

2014 GTD

Started having issues after about 16 months. very unresponsive screen especially when cold.

Sometimes after 10 sec or so it would catch up and you could see it flicking through all the commands I had previously done.

A 2 yrs old and for the first time I had a blank screen on startup. A restart reset it.

Love the car but if I'd bought it I wouldn't be very happy, imagine it's not an easy thing to solve properly.

My car is in the dealers again today

They have said the problem with heater matrix pipes knocking on body work sorted, this is a known fault , bulletin for fix.

Complete software reload again for infotainment system , again!

They forgot what they are supposed to look at on the hold assist brake , complete failure with me rolling backwards in traffic and other drivers honking in panic , they now have to interrogate ECU to check fault , they have found photo they took of dash showing fault now .

They have to test drive again to asses DMF possible fault , noise grauching when clutch engages when pushing hard

Must tell them about driving lights , failed ! Just to make their day!

Also rattle developed from near side rear door area !

Have similar issue on brand new Touran. Video HERE. I activated the touch sounds at a moment when I had access to the screen as this helps to know when the system has in fact gone pear shaped (more than 50% of the time). In this case you can control nothing with the screen - you cant even make or take phonecalls without using the actual handset (sound still routes the car system if the phone is already paired). This is of course both dangerous and illegal but also inevitable as many mandatory phone meetings and customer interactions coincide with travel time. You will also notice in the video that the dashboard navigation shows "No Sat Reception" whereas the central screen has correctly evolving satellite location - sometimes this suddenly starts working even if the central screen is out of control... I have found no workaround - even switching off and waiting for all lights to go off does not fix most of the time. VW has no fix - my dealer has seen this issue on other vehicles: In all cases SW updates and even HW replacements (screen and even entire system) did not fix; I am on latest firmware anyway.... The dealer claims VW DE is working on a fix but there is no ETA...

You will also find a YouTube video HERE from someone else demonstrating the same issue: Perhaps the motoring press might be interested in this issue that is apparently widespread and has no solution?
