Really don't like the grey. Genuinely considering wrapping it in vinyl. Thinking maybe a flat silver to match the brushed aluminium parts, bit like the "frozen" m5 colour. Or maybe just white, which looks really well too.

Without going off on a tangent, are there any "wrapping" threads on pistonheads?

Without going off on a tangent, are there any "wrapping" threads on pistonheads? Guessing here, but I'd assume it'll cost less than a Natalie paint upgrade anyway, plus protect the grey paint for handing back!

Been doing a bit of research, primarily trying to find a Urano Grey all track to see what it looks like.
What's wrong with looking at it on the Configurator?

Eg, if you spec up the DSG alltrack on www.volkswagen.de (german website) to get the same spec car as the standard uk spec, its well in excess of 50,000 euros - or over £40 grand in our money. The euro conversion has dropped from 1.42 ish at the turn of the year to 1.27 ish which in simple terms, means VW are losing around £6k margin on each and every alltrack sold in the UK because of the exchange rate. Add in the fact that they have screwed up the lease price for this deal - effectively, their £40k car is going to be worth in or around £20k in 2 years time - but we only pay peanuts for it :smoking:
I wouldn't worry about it - I used to work in the car industry and it'll cost VW well under £20K to build them so they won't be losing money.

This is where the Urano Grey alltrack falls down IMO. Because the grey 'alltrack' protection is virtually the same colour as the actual paintwork, it loses the overall effect and therefore isn't able to separate itself enough from the regular passat estate because of this.
I guess that could suit some people. It was the extra cost of metallic (and a couple of other options) that put me off leasing a Tiguan and the impact is exaggerated on the Alltrack. On Tiguan Nimbus Grey (looks the same as Indium Grey on Alltrack) is a very popular colour and it doesn't look a whole different to Urano.

I've got no problem with the colour at all. And besides, its another 550 quid to change it. If it was a keeper I might give a st hehe

I think the configurator gives a good indication but for me, I think its better to see the actual pictures (or even better, to see in the flesh if at all possible)

When I was at my local VW dealer, I seen a few cars with Urano Grey colour and I actually like the colour and should do well at hiding moderate levels of dirt - unlike my current black car which is tough to keep looking clean. The thing I don't like about the Urano Grey on the Alltrack is that it camouflages the grey plastic protection surround which I think looks so much better against contrasting colours. Apart from that, I think it looks really smart.

Absolutely - its eating into their profit margin rather than costing them money like you say.

Yes, probably about £25ish extra a month for one of the metallic paints and when people are paying in around £120-£150 a month for the car, £25 seems like quite a big difference.

The white non metallic is quite cheap, £200 odd and I think it would really lift the car and for me personally, I would be more than happy to pay that. The kerbside appeal between white and urano grey is quite a big difference in my view. When I get out of the car at home or in a car park, I think the white would give me that satisfying 'look back' feeling as I walk away which I don't think I'll get from the Urano Grey that I have ordered.

I'm going to see if I can somehow just make a straight one off payment to get my car changed from grey to white so that the finance deal itself doesn't need to change.

I won't lose any sleep over it of course and I don't mean to sound negative as I still really like the car in any colour at all - after all, its loaded with so many options as standard once I'm behind the wheel, I'm pretty sure I'm going to really enjoy driving it. I've got 2 children and I play golf too and my current car has such a small boot it will make a big difference having all that space once I have the Alltrack. Its going to be a perfect switch from my Jaguar S Type. The Jag is a V6 twin turbo diesel mapped to 250BHP and is such a smooth driver - pace with grace and the Passat should have a similar drive.

The 190DSG won't be too far behind the Jag in terms of pace, and with its excellent insulation, I'm hoping it will at least 'sound' as refined as the V6 Jag engine from inside the cabin. The ride should be quite similar as well and I like the idea of it being able to soak up the bumps in the road to good effect. I regularly take a mountain route to and from work so as to avoid the congested motorway but parts of the road are quite poor so the Alltrack will hopefully be perfect for it, especially in winter when the weather isn't good. The all wheel drive is going to come in very useful as the motorway journey time can double during wintery conditions - I'll just go over the mountain instead smile

I'm really impressed with my missus' 4Motion DSG Tiguan - although she got it new last Sept it's been out 8yrs now. The Alltrack should be better still, being on the new MQB platform and with all the latest tech.

Nimbus Grey on hers is a nightmare to clean, and keep clean, by the way!

I'm beginning to regret not going for the Alltrack deal but I'd just spent a grand on service and maintenance on my old C270CDi Estate and I do really like it. But if I'd been sensible I should have grabbed the chance to dump it - it's only going to get worse at throwing up bills.

Yep, been there, never again. In fact the only colour that is worse than white to keep clean is black.

Given the option to change colour I would go for is the Harvard blue otherwise I'm happy saving the £500.

After reading the 'hate' for the grey, i'm happy i'm paying an extortionate £10/month for white.

My misses really isn't happy about having it but at £130/month, I couldn't give any less fks than humanly possible.

Quite the opposite. I am unsure how working 'in the industry' has given you complete knowledge over VWs pricing model, do you know the contribution margin they need to make on each car to meet the fixed costs? Do you know the dealer margin applicable to the RRP? What about the volume and marketing incentives the dealer gets on top?

I'll suggest that even at full retail price VW make very little margin on an Alltrack once all of the above have been taken into consideration, given what they have done on these lease deals they would be taking a massive hit on the upfront sale. Not anyone's problem of course, but most likely someone at VW has lost their job over this.

Was "to build them" hard to understand?

I said in the leasing thread that based on the number of cars being spoken about, this could well be a million pound error. But if the line isn't fully loaded then the incremental cost of building another car is surprisingly small.

I'm still amazed VW honoured the deals. It's not like public image could be any lower right now, so I doubt it would've stuck.

Having dealt with VW a bit, I'm amazed too. It's another thing that put me off applying as it was so clearly a mistake it seemed certain to end in tears.

However for a few hours some brokers and even VW dealers were insisting it wasn't an error, so obviously VW felt they couldn't walk away from it.

The public line is that this is a mistake. I don't have any facts to disprove this. But it's convenient that this comes at the same time as falling sales and a poor public image over emissions. I wouldn't be surprised if the marketing dept part funded this campaign.

I asked both the broker and the dealer. Both said no.

Actually that's not quite right. Rather, both said yes, but the price then needs to be recalculated on current rates.
