I find I have to turn off the start stop and stick it in sport mode for entering busy roundabouts, otherwise you're dicing with death. Much of the time it feels pretty sluggish in normal mode. Mine is averaging 39mpg which is a long way from the claimed figure. Moan, whinge, moan, first world problems. Still very happy with it for the money!
Yes I'm toying with the car more now, done 2k in it so far.

In D at constant speed, say, 50 or 60, even if you hit the accelerator it takes a second or so for the power to come on, is that turbo lag?! The car seems to need a short space of time to 'spool up' as it were.

Have to say overall I'm over the moon with it, just getting used to the characteristics of a diesel coming from a naturally aspirated V8 with instant throttle response!

I think the delay is the gearbox, certainly it isn't quick to choose a ratio when in normal mode, I find that pretty irritating but again, my other car is also a n/a V8 with a manual gearbox, so it's hardly apples with apples as a comparison...

Is it? I'm not talking about kick down, I'm talking about staying in the same gear. Unless the torque convertor jobby is like a long piece of elastic...!!

I presume it's slipping the clutch.

Ok, yes I know what you mean. It does feel sluggish when it holds the gear and you ask for a bit more thrust.

It doesn't have a torque converter. I think that's probably part of the problem - the drive-train is "locked" by the clutches so the engine can't spin up and get the turbo going as it would with a torque converter auto.

Also, at 50 ish MPH, the engine is going to be at something like 1500RPM - the torque curve is very steep until 1750RPM. What's it like if you do the same thing at 60+, with the engine at a bit over 2K RPM?

Everything the car does has a slight delay to it.

Couple of questions -

Has anyone mounted a smartphone on the dash? If so what how have you done it? pics would be nice. smile

Also, does anyone else find the volume set to zero when they start using the system or switching sources? It doesn't do it very often, but sometimes when I get in the car and switch to DAB or Bluetooth, I think it hasn't started playing, but the volume is down to zero, even though it was definately up last time I used it.

Nope. Pop mine in the rearward cup holder powering from the USB.

I use one of these, it's really good, sturdy and keeps the phone steady. And is tiny when removed and not being used.

Funnily enough two things happened today.

First, a lease booklet turned up with VWFS expectations of how the car should be looked after etc. It states that any modifications are my responsibility and when returning the car I should make good holes in the paintwork etc, but seeing as the towbar is unobtrusive I'll just crack on.

Oh and I ordered a westfalia detachable with electrics etc to be fitted next week, £400. Tidy. Will post pics when it's done.
Had this done yet hornetrider? We're off caravan hunting this weekend and I need to sort a towbar!

Yes, yes I have. It's pissing it down at the mo, so no pics. Not entirely uneventful mind. I'll put an update down over the weekend.

Right taken some pics.

As you can see, from behind nothing to be seen.

Here's the towbar in the spare wheel.

And underneath, a cut into the underside of the bumper.

So the electrics rotate down, and the piece which looks like a H is the plug that the bar slots into when it's in situ.

The bad news is the guy fitting it managed to scratch the lower plastic silver trim piece in a couple of small places, which displeased me greatly. I knocked 50 off the price paid for it, then rang VW and found out they charge 70 for a new one! Still waiting to hear back from the towbar company after I informed them.

How do you plan to remove and correct that when it goes back? Or will you just leave the tow bar on?

Haven't decided yet. It's a bumper off job, but not too major according to the install guy. The biggest job for him (which involved half of the rear trim coming out) was installing the electrics. At £350 all in I'd have to question if it's worth my time and the ballache, frankly.

On returning the car they are unlikely to be that thorough. Just pocket the £50.

Where did you get it done? Sounds like quite a decent price, damage notwithstanding...

Quickie. My engine cut off when stationary seems to have a mind of its own. Ok I should read the manual. But I haven't ever done this

So, is this a feature !
biggrin Button hidden to the left of the gearstick should stop that happening. The auto cutoff drives me nuts, especially when waiting at junctions to pull out. By the time the car has started the engine and put itself in gear I'm just in time to pull right out in front of a fking huge bus or truck. eek
You can also control it with the footbrake. If you press the peddle firmly enough to keep the car stationary, but not all the way to the floor, it doesn't start / stop - takes a bit of getting used to, but becomes natural after a while.

Also with the auto the start / stop feature changes with the auto hold. With auto hold off, the car will stop on the brake and start coming off the brake. With auto hold on, the car will stop on the brake and restart on acceleration. Both have their pros and cons.
