So I test drove a Mazda CX5 the other day as the Mrs needs a new car. It was the 2.2D but in hindsight I forgot to ask which version. There's a 150bhp/280lb/ft or 175/310.

Anyway the power delivery put the Alltrack to shame. There is a massive glug of creamy torque on tap from low down with near instant throttle response. Even a small application of throttle has the car pulling cleanly through the rev range.

Contrast that to getting back in the VW and it feels like something is holding it back or it's trying to accelerate through mud even in 'sports' mode.

I don't understand it really as on paper the figures are good. I can't help wondering if the emissions stuff has hamstrung contemporary VWs.
I've been wondering that too. We previously discussed the pros and cons of remapping, but I wonder if a remap could put the car back to itself, including high NOx, or if VW have physically added something to the car? Looking under the bonnet and there are some strange looking bits of kit.

Anyone else had problems with the boot catch? On a number of occasions, despite giving it a good thump, the boot catch has failed to engage properly. Took it to local VW dealer but of course no fault found. Hasn't happened since but wondered if this is a common problem?

Well yeah. But I meant as in the lower round light rather than something integrated into the main cluster...

Had a problem with mine not shutting, as if the catch wasn't engaging. In the end I got it to shut by locking the central locking with the fob and shutting it when it was locked.

Had it booked in at the dealers but it seemed to resolve itself so cancelled. Been ok since smile

Had it

I just called the VW customer helpline number to check my VW breakdown cover was active - I was surprised that you only get one year cover, so mine runs out in May - I thought you got 3 years. frown

I've just checked my documents and it reads

"We wiil tax your vehicle and provide roadside assistance for every year of your agreement"

Worth a call to double check.

I vaguely remember someone from VWFS leaving me a voice message last year about them contacting me to activate my roadside recovery - maybe I need to speak to VWFS about it and not VW customer services - I have until May.....

Ah yes that might be it. I did phone to activate my roadside recovery soon after delivery.

Trivial update.
Car has done 12k now. Front tyres down to 4-5mm and rears 6-7mm. So I've swapped them around.
Hoping to now do another 10k before replacing the lot. With some luck that will be it before returning the car in May 2018.

Make sure you let us know how you get on.

Has anyone done enough mileage to need a first service yet?

Any update on this one?

In other news I've given up on the gearbox ever being satisfactory. I now use it in manual mode and the car is much more pleasant to drive. It's just a shame the plus and minus are the 'wrong' way around in my eyes.

I drive mine in Sport all the time, knocking it into D when I'm cruising on the motorway - the stick is back to front, but the paddles feel correct to me.

Yeah I'm not a fan of paddles. Not in a diesel repmobile anyway laugh

Sport mode irritates me because even on light throttle it won't change up when I'm not blasting about. Does my Swede in high revving at 3k rpm when I'm not accelerating.
