I've turned it down as I've got something else in the pipeline.

I really need to drive it properly at the weekend. First impressions are that it's a very capable car and a different place to be compared to my Fiesta ST. Not as playful, more grown up. I actually miss the playfulness of that car. The torque steer was predictable and the nimbleness made it easy to place. I suspect it's just an adjustment phase as the Golf really is point and go and just does it with no fuss.

I also need to read the manual as I need to make sure I'm fully aware of the adaptive cruise etc. I turned it off to get the mileage reading I think. Is the miles in the bottom left corner (circled) total mileage that doesn't reset?

Glad you got a 3 door. The 5 door looks incredibly dull, like Golfs always have in too many door flavour. Not that I've looked particularly hard yet, but I have noticed a distinct lack of 3 door options as a lease.

That is how 4WD Golfs have always been. The weight of them numbs the nimbleness a bit. That inert feeling of heft and security quickly grows on you though, because it doesn't get tossed around the road half as much as some lighter, stiffer sprung, more agile hatches.

Thanks for the reply. I'm starting to gel with the car now. Did a longer drive London to Northampton the weekend and it's a comfortable place to be and overtakes effortlessly.

This is very subjective, I think that if they had changed the shape of the car for the 3 door such as Seat did with the outgoing Ibiza or like the Astra Mk5 then that would be a different story. I can't put my finger on it but something about the 3 door Golfs from Mk5 onward make the 3 doors look like an afterthought compared to 5 doors in terms of the lines of the car and the glass shape. I do think this is less the case on Mk7 than the other two though.

I agree, the MK7 did at least keep the same basic body shape, but there's just something about shorter doors and the rear quarter glass that just doesn't gel for me visually. Like you say, with the MK5/6, the steeply raked rear quarter panel defined the look of the car in 3 door flavour, but the 5 door did away with that shape completely, and it looked horribly bland as a consequence, imo.

You can definitely see where VW saved a lot of money with the MK7's design.

They're offering the new 310 R Estate in standard spec at £398 / month on a 1+23, 10k plus £300 fee. Seemed decent to me?

I may place an order tomorrow unless someone tells me I'm missing something...

Just never been too much of a fan of the five doors in general. There was nothing in it price wise and it's just the two of us. Occasionally 3/4 if we go for a drive out for dinner and take my Mum with us.

Assuming this isn't delivered before 31 March does that price include the increased VED rate for the first year?

Wow - over £9 grand down the pan in 2 years! Why not get a loan and buy a low mileage nearly new one for say £21k. It would only cost you £2-3 grand including interest and depreciation, and you could spend the other £6k on something else! Just a thought - hate to see ppl throwing money away

It's a Mk7 Golf R. The OP is looking at a Mk7.5 facelift model, which is 95% the same, just some mild updates. Tbh the novelty of owning a 'new' car wears off pretty quickly, especially now that number plates change every 6 months. A 2014 car is hardly old! Even if he went for a used DSG model, you'd still make a massive saving over renting, thats' my only point. Just giving the guy some options.

For me, the biggest draw of a Mk7.5 over the Mk7 would be the option of the virtual dashboard first seen on the Audi TT. I find myself barely looking at the dials on my cars these days and much prefer a digital speedo (both my cars have one in addition to their dials) so dispensing with the dials altogether is quite appealing to me.
