The Golf R lease thread

Tonker what modes are you driving around in? I find it a bit sluggish to respond unless I leave it in Race, then switch to S when I'm making proper progress else leave it in D.
I don't see how the paddleshift is slow at all though, compared to even a good manual gearbox its a lot quicker plus the blip to rev match.

Aren't all double clutchers like this?Really, please do read that post on using the gearbox, it'll help I'm sure. The suggested techniques to get the gearbox ready for the desired change should eliminate the slow-wittedness you're experiencing. The poor economy, maybe not, sorry.

I'm afraid to say I had a similar experience with an S4 - had a manual for 2/3 years which I loved then was foolish enough to trade 'up' to a DSG. Never really got on with it at all and ended up chopping it in after 4/5 months at a massive loss as I couldn't stand it any longer anonymous said:

I wonder why it's so naff? Like when the mk7 came out it was meant to be the gearbox to have according to reviews! I had a mk5 ed30 DSG and a B8 S4 Stronic (which admittedly is a completely different gearbox) and they were both great so I wonder what they have done wrong? I nearly got mine with DSG but couldn't justify the price difference at the time.Interestingly the DSG MPG figures were always better than manual, until mk6 I think. I wonder if they had to change some of the design for whatever reason which then made it more inefficient?
Seems such a shame if they have cocked up such a good gearbox, and even worse if it is ruining a mint car.

my vehicle's been with the dealer in the compound since last week...
VW also said it's likely to be the 16th before deliveries actually start going out..
I got an e-mail saying mine landed in the UK on the 28th of December - was yours the same ?VW also said it's likely to be the 16th before deliveries actually start going out..
How did you manage to get the order number ?

Seems that there are quite a few of you with a dislike of the dsg and how it affects the car.Ive been looking for info on the facelift seven speed,to see if any of these issues are going to be addressed.
Anyone have any thoughts or any links on the gearbox change or will it just be an emissions beater?

I've had several DSG's and you do get used to their strengths/ weaknesses, especially at roundabouts/stop start traffic. Only major issue I'm having the R is the change from 1st to 2nd when in D (not S) and full throttle, i.e. pulling out from a t junction and getting up to speed quickly. Seems to lurch on me every time, anyone else??

My last 3 cars have had a dsg box, Seat Lean 140 tdi + 2 x Skoda Octavia vrs 170 cr hatch. Covered 94,000 miles total.
Always drive in manual mode using gear lever. I only use auto in traffic, as there can be transmission / turbo lag in certain road conditions like inclines / roundabout camber. Never use paddles, as too short for me to use comfortably.
I can go up and down gearbox faster than I could in a manual. Can`t beat it imo.

I find it only affects the change from 1st to 2nd when in D and full throttle also (S mode never seems to have this issue). It can be surprising just how much it lurches though as it almost feels as though the engine has bashed into the rev limiter and can feel like an age before it gets into 2nd gear and gets going again. Not ideal if overtaking for example.
My solution is generally (when I remember) to flick it into S mode on the gearbox when approaching a busy junction or thinking about overtaking etc. This seems to do the trick.
That said, whilst I do agree that the gearbox is far from perfect, I still find that I quite like it and would probably find it hard to go back to manual now. I also thinks it suits the Golf R Estate I'm driving as it can be sedate when family is all in the car but can up its game in S or manual mode when on my own.
Certainly I'm still loving my R Estate at 7 months and 6k miles in.
