Since getting my order in for one of the estates a few weeks ago; I've been keeping an eye out for to see if I can spot any other R estates. I do quite a bit of driving but as yet I've not seen a single one. Loads of 5dr hatches but not one estate. They've been out a while now haven't they?

Ive actually only seen a very small number of golf estate of any sort (they look distinctly average too, except for one GTD estate which looked quite nice)

Anyone else spotted many about? Just out of interest really...
Saw my first one last week, it overtook me whilst I was cycling along. Sounded awesome and the colour look great (Lapiz blue, which is what I have ordered).

Other than that, seen the odd hatch here and there but no other estates!

Do they sound alright? To be honest I took a complete punt on ordering one. I#d been looking for ages for a decent lease deal and it was too good to turn down. I've never even seen the inside of a golf r, in fact I've never driven a newer golf than a Mk4, and never tried a DSG. All I knew was I needed an estate for work, wanted an auto and something that was a bit faster than my current co. car; a Megane SW with 105bhp. Just don't want to dwell too much on the potential fuel bills!!

I'm quite looking forward to getting this car now :-)

Me too. Never driven a Golf. Never seen an estate in the flesh until after I ordered it. Still not driven one.

I have watched a LOT of youtube videos about it though... I'm figuring either everyone is wrong, or it is a great car.

The closest place that 'might' have an estate R is Milton Keynes (to me anyway). Aylesbury VW weren't interested - I'm probably not their demographic for an R.
I've watched pretty much all the videos you can find, a lot of them are in German.
I've only ever seen one R Estate on the roads.

I took a partial punt. I test drove a GTI DSG and thought it was great. Been a passenger in an R hatch 5 or 6 times and liked it but never driven it. Here is hoping I actually like the car smile

I'm running out of R related vids to watch now. Need some more material. The best in depth review was the slightly camp German guy in Spain. The assembly video is worth a watch too.

I've not driven or seen an R either.

I own 2007 Eos diesel DSG but it isn't quite the same wink and the closest I've come to one is hiring a 1.6 diesel hatch DSG in Italy last year.

At the price it seemed too good to miss so I'm hoping it's good smile

Yes, Aylesbury VW are a bit odd at times - I mentioned the R deals in 2014 when I looked at buying an approved used Gti or R, the sales guy looked quite annoyed and insisted it was a mistake by VW and would never be repeated - glad he was wrong :-)

MK is part of the same group and I have arranged my lease with the group business development manager David East - he has been excellent so far, very efficient and has kept me up to date with everything.

I live in Aylesbury, so will hopefully collect it from them - hope it is not the guy I spoke to last time! he will be very cross :-)
But If it gets delivered to MK and will be driven across, I might just arrange to collect it from there and have a nice drive home.

Aylesbury had a nice blue hatch in the showroom that I sat in and played with all the buttons - they have a GTD estate out the front too and that looks very nice.

I'm pretty sure the R will just about meet this criteria... thumbup

I've seen 3 estates on the road to date, but I'm expecting this number to increase significantly in the coming months courtesy of PH smile

This is exactly my experience with Aylesbury VW as well. My wife and I were looking for a car at the start of the year to replace her MX5 and we went to Aylesbury VW to look at the Golf GTI/R. Not one person came over to speak to us when we were looking at the Golf GTI and Polo GTI which were both on display in the showroom. The receptionist who was sitting opposite the Golf didn't even have the courtesy of saying hello.

It was not as if there were other customers or they were all on the phone as we were the only customers in there at the time and everyone seemed to be simply staring into space. In fact, I distinctly remember 2 of the salesman were both staring at a computer screen together on what looked like Youtube.

The sad reality is that we ended up buying a GTI which came all the way from Stockport of all places. I don't know if it's because me and the wife are still relatively young but it comes across as an almost snobbish assumption that you can't really afford to be interested in their cars which is, frankly, ridiculous. Alternatively, and worse still, they simply can't be bothered.

I ordered my R through David East (who seems to bridge MK and Aylesbury) and I have also found him to be very helpful. I am actually tempted to travel to MK to pick the car up rather than go to Aylesbury just because I begrudge going into that dealership now. Shame really.

I too am from Aylesbury, but ordered mine through Northampton VW - Alan Duckett, seems all good. I've been tracking it all the time until I received 'Build Week Confirmed'.
Now I've made a spreadsheet with a calendar for key dates. Mine will be delivered to Northampton, and I'll drive it home from there.

I went in to Aylesbury VW at about 18:10, albeit late - 20 minutes before close - It still could have been a sale.
There was a sales guy that came up to me, stinking of weed, I was a bit wary. Hopefully he doesn't drug-drive!
They have an Alltrack (Golf) in the showroom, I had a look at that, then wandered over to the R hatch they had. It really does look great in Blue.
They didn't seem interested in trying to arrange a test drive for the R hatch, even though I had said I was looking at the R estate. I presume they just wanted to go home.
Ah well. Perhaps I'll drive over to MK to test drive one there.

Do you know/think you know when you'll be picking yours up?

I've got a date of 1st July, 9 weeks and 2 days. (this is just an estimate, based on times from build, to shipping from Emden, to delivery at the dealer, and then their prep)...

I'm a little bit sad when it comes to things like this. I've got 3 months payments tucked away as well. Probably expecting to have 6 months payments tucked away by the time I collect it smile Just in case!

What spec did you go for?

Yep, very odd. Did not seem interested in selling me a car either, said they had nothing in my price range on their stock list and did not even seem to consider discounting slightly or even try to up-sell.
Obviously they are doing so well with sales, they did not need my money? I spent it with BMW instead, about 2 hours later, their sales team could not do enough to help.

Really wanted a Golf (R or Gti) but they didn't even try - really pleased this lease deal came up whilst I was looking.

Mine is scheduled for build week starting 9th May - hopefully be at the dealer for early June?
I went for base spec in white - options started to take it too far above the 'bargain' price and I then looked at lots of reviews and decided 'poverty spec' was for me laugh
Would like the 19inch pretoria wheels, but the cadiz are growing on me.

I see a Lapiz blue R estate every day on my drive to work usually around Buckingham.

I went into the dealers in Oxford the other day to have a look at one - they had one parked round the back that I looked at, very nice! Its way smaller than I was expecting, but the 4 exhaust pipes look ace - like a mini AMG :-)

Mine starts build next week should be collecting early June.

SNAP! Mine is identical save for the App Connect which seems like a cheap way to get nav in the car. However, standard spec is fairly good otherwise.

Mine has the same build week scheduled as well so, fingers crossed, that collection for start of June is possible.

Very excited now albeit not looking forward to trying so sell the ST as selling cars is always a bit of a chore. Will be worth it though.

same, my build date is w/c 2nd May. How do you know you'll collect early June? I've not really heard much from the VW dealer I ordered with since they sent me back my order confirmation and tracking number and explained how to track the order.

I asked the dealer, that's what she told me.

My last car had Nav and I never used it - thought about app connect, it does look good, but I stayed strong and stuck with base smile

Selling cars privately is never fun. I never have the time available to keep up with the requests to come and look and test driving privately is a potential insurance nightmare if it goes wrong.
Got some quotes from WBAC and Mike Brewer motors and then went along to my dealer and asked them for a price - they gave me £1000 more than MB and £2000 more than WBAC - very surprised.
I could have possibly taken £1000 more if I sold privately, but for a stress/hassle free deal I went with the dealer.
Might be worth asking a Ford dealer what they could offer you? They normally have a buyer who will give you a price.

I can't be certain but the wife's GTI (also leased) was built and delivered within approx. 4 weeks so it seems a realistic estimate.

Fair point. I have a WBAC price so I figure that's my baseline anyway. I might ask Ford to give me a quote and see how I get on. Certainly, in my view, it's worth losing out on a few quid when compared with a potential private sale for the sake of ease.

I will wait and see when VW reckon they can deliver the R and then take it from there.

Hmmm, it generally can take approx. 2 weeks until it will be ready for collection.
So probably pickup/delivery on the 24th June?
I added the Car-Net App Connect. I use spotify so thought it would be worth it.
I would prefer the ride quality on 18s compared to the 19s.
Mine seemed quite cheap with the Car-Net, I'd be interested to know what your offer was.
Mine was £220.80 6+23 with some deposit contribution from the dealer - £925.20

My R Estate is also scheduled to be built w/c 9th May, white, no options! I too have never been in a Golf R or a Golf Estate. I've had a couple of cars recently with DSG and found it to be very good.

I live in Oxford and have been to the VW garage in Kidlington Motor park. A couple of Golf R there on site and and an estate. Looked at the interior of both and think I probably will like it.

It is my first lease, can't see any issues as it is only depreciation costs which I get all the time. Currently driving a Range Rover Supercharged - shall have to sell it Privately no doubt - or maybe even keep it"!" :-)
