Are most VW (5) stud patterns the same?

Looking to confirm if a 2014 Beetle wheel will fit a 2014 Transporter T5. The ideal scenario would be to try one on, but short of buying one this option is a non runner ATM.

Beetle is 5x112. Transporter is 5x120, unless it's the 1.6 engine, then it's 4x120.

Does this mean an adapator plate is needed?

You either need wheels that fit or adapters, would recommend getting the right wheels TBH

You're correct most VAG cars are the same stud pattern, but you chose one of the only ones that isn't, the Transporter.

PCD Adaptors will cost you about £200, and space the wheels roughly 20mm.
