Looking at picking up a manual Mk5 Golf GTI (5 door). Is the 230bhp Edition 30 worth the extra cost over a standard 200bhp GTI?

I believe the engines in them are far more receptive to power mods if that's your thing.

I'm not aware of any other mechanical differences between them and the standard GTI though

This, the ed30 engine is a detuned s3 engine and although the standard gti engine is essentially the same the ed30 has the uprated bits from the s3/R etc

Is it the turbo that makes the biggest difference against the stock GTI?

Yes, you would be much better off in an ED30.
Infinitely more tunable and the engines are tougher as well.

When I was looking 8 years ago it was a no brainer for me.

As mentioned the car is a great deal more than just 30bhp being a de-tuned S3 lump with the bigger KO4 blower, and then running gear to match. I found that the engine would just keep pulling all the way to the red where as the standard felt like it just ran out of steam.

We sold ours four years ago and regretted it which is why a new R ended up on the drive last year. Quicker, most definitely, as special, not even close.

Go for it and enjoy and see your investment rise.

gti has a kos3 turbo while ed30 is a k04, so remap you are talking 260bhp in gti compared to say 300 or so in edition 30 if that is your thing as said

It's a k03, not a k03s.

GTI on k03 can go up to 300bhp.
k04 turbo is good for about 360 reliably, you can eek it to 380 if you want.

A remapped standard Mk5 GTI will be quicker than an Ed30 (mine was very rapid, thanks to the boys at R-Tech) but I'd get an Ed30 if you can afford it, much better looking, more special all round and collectible.

With what supporting hardware and boost pressure?

you probably know full well what mods. :-)
fuel pump, intercooler, intake, exhaust, valve clean, 155bar frv (not even strictly needed).

also above, a remapped ed30 would muller a remapped gti so it's not really a fair comparison is it :-)

Just curious as I've not heard of a K03 EA113 hitting 300hp before. It's a ridiculously small turbo, so that amount of power is surprising!

Oh haha. Yeah the usual max is about 275-280 but a healthy motor can push 300, it is right at the limits though.
Someone did 303 on TFSI tuning with meth. Although meth didn't add much power, just kept intake temps low.

They're both good engines but for me, the Edition 30's midrange and top end feel a lot chunkier. You can feel the K03 engine running out of puff a lot sooner, but it's the better engine for tight B roads imo. The Edition is a bit laggy.
