Hi All

My wife is looking for a new car and the gold R and GTI 5 dr look likely. She only does about 6-8k per year and we are flexible on term and deposit. Does anyone have any recent experience of deals to be had along with supporting dealers before I start to trawl the net?

Thanks for any advice/help in advance

Steve

I test drive both and I chose the gti performance pack with dsg

Tbh I was terrified the stories of heard of ppl breaking in to houses for R's
And the standard spec wasn't as good at the time

Love mine will get another gti definately

Oh and on a 200 mile run I got a massive 48mpg out of it 😊

Another vote for the GTI here.

The R is just too common and I can`t get on with those 4 exhausts (trivial points I know...).

+1 GTI

I keep mistaking R's for the Golf "Match" Edition.

So sad that you have to consider theft such a problem that it could actually determine your buying decision - especially given it's a relatively normal car - albeit as is the way these days with 300bhp!

Agree the GTI does look better, though can't quite figure out why (except the standard wheels are much better than those on the R (IMO) )

Are they still getting stolen, not heard of one for a while - though no doubting they did, Car magazine had theirs knicked?

I wouldn't let the potential of it getting stolen concern me, that's what insurance is for. For new a lease the R is better value. But for buying used I might be tempted by the GTI as it has more character.

I think most people's concern is that before they steel the car they break into your house first of all. Not pleasant if your wife & kids are asleep at the time!

Well I just bought an R so you can guess what I would recommend but I'm a sucker for 4WD and power biggrin

Go for the Golf R, the power and 4 wheel drive and the low mileage you do make it the perfect choice. As for them getting nicked, all sorts of cars do so I wouldn't let that put me off

I have a GTi and bloody love it (5 door) but I must confess i'd have an R if I could justify it but on the company car tax scheme the R is too painful...

Yep. You might think differently when 3 lads wearing balaclava's kick you front door in at 6pm on a Saturday eve when you are sitting down to dinner with the kids!!

Recently had the same dilemma myself and last week ended up putting putting down a deposit on a GTI with the performance pack, DSG, leather and a few other toys. Had originally been looking to get the R and may possibly regret not doing it, but for the majority of my driving I wouldn't really get to use the extra power of the R and would probably be more appreciative of the creature comforts, especially sat in stationery traffic on the motorway on a cold winters morning. I was also probably swayed by the fact that I grew up wanting a GTI when I was a teenager when the Golf R wasn't a thing. The R just doesn't have the history of the GTI.

Bought mine via Drive the Deal who are doing some pretty good discounts at the moment. Tried to see if my local dealer would match, but they were over £1000 away on price. As for lease or buy, it depends what you want on spec. Could have maybe got a cheap lease deal but once you start adding a few options it's not particularly cost effective.

Do people really do armed robbery for a Golf? A supercar I could understand a bit more. Special cases.

If it was my money and it had to be a Golf it would be the R.

It's an interesting question, I too have wondered why they steal them in particular, I've assumed to perform a 'blagging' (for those to young watch the Sweeney!), as they're fairly subtle and under the radar, plus in the South East they're almost as common as TDI's!

But that's only a guess though.

i wondered the same thing and its like when they used to nick escort and saff cossies

they're fast they're 4wd and apart from the helicopter most cops can't keep up

but as above the heritage of the gti far surpasses the R i absolutely love mine and would be heartbroken if it got nicked
my next car will more than likely be a gti too or a bmw 330d but my gti kicked the arse of one of them a few days back

That's pretty surprising to be honest, considering my fiesta ST will stick with a GTI I'd think the 330d would likely pull away from either!
