They do all work but only if you are in the right 'mode' - the default is that you end up only using two unless you take action (which I do obviously wink )
Unless it's an estate. The inside two on the estate aren't attached to anything. Actually, the whole system isn't attached, but at least the outside two have ones that flow through.
You've comprehensively out geeked me there! nerd

Ahh thanks for clarifying, it was an estate I was following yesterday where it was very prominent, but I'm pretty sure I'd noticed it on hatchbacks too.

They activate only in Race mode in the Hatchback IIRC

Is that with DSG? On a manual car there is no way in "individual" mode of having all the pipes open. "Sport engine" doesnt do it. Race mode is the only way to have all the pipes open. DSG might be different.

There is a whole lot of chat about this on another forum (vwroc) - here's my attempt at a summary lifted from a thread on the other site - I believe this is correct:

Ok so I had a look today and I think I have sussed it - just to be completely clear this is for a 2016 manual:

Individual mode has:

'Drive' - which if you set to 'Sport' opens all 4 exhausts
'Engine Sound' - controls the soundaktor fake noise - I have this at 'normal' as 'sport' is a bit much for me

You need to cycle the modes on start up - I tested this and you only get 2 exhausts initially until you cycle round (ie hit the button 4/5 times!)

Hi yes that's interesting, but doesn't happen on my 2016 manual R.
In individual mode there is:
Engine - using "sport" sharpens throttle response and makes the soundaktor noisier.
Interior engine sound - again "sport" makes soundaktor noisier.

Definitely no option to open the outer pipes, I've double checked. I get the cycle thing, I've tried that too.
The only way on mine of having all the pipes open is using "race" mode, you can tell the difference as it's markedly louder from outside.
Perhaps I just have a weirdo car!
Anyway, we digress, it's a great car!

Hmm - all very odd. I just double checked mine:

- start up in the normal way, check exhausts (by hand) and only the inner two are venting
- toggle through the modes to individual
- check again (by hand) and all 4 are venting
