Got the Cupra 290 Lux from my 67 Cupra 300 and a few improvements.

Heated seats
Keyless

However, the change in engine tone from comfort to sport to Cupra is poor. No real change in pitch or aggression. I have also found that the mirrors don’t fold in? Am I doing something wrong? I have double clicked on fob and nothing!!!

If I had known that I would have not got the same model
Engine note might change once it's run in a bit, but they are a bit more strangled now. As to the mirrors, on my 18 plate car you just hold the lock button down for about 3 seconds.
The folding mirrors option just needs to be ticked in the vehicle settings menu.

Agree on the exhaust note. My new Cupra ST is a bit muted in sport and Cupra mode, but it's not a major issue as I quite like it being under stated.

Don't mean to piss on anybodys chips but you do know the change in sound between comfort/sport/cupra is a fake noise inside the car, the car has no exhaust valves or anything. The sound of the engine and car on the outside never changes. biggrin

First thing to do is unplug that ungodly soundaktor, 5 mins under the bonnet and job done. Without the soundaktor when you do rag it then you can just about hear the turbo spooling up!

I've seen a few vids but not attempted, Carista can turn it off also.

I wasn't a big fan of my last Leon, initial impressions of the improvements on the newer one :

  1. Digital dash (didn't get it on my last one)
  2. Gearbox
  3. The magnetic grey colour, I had monsoon grey last time but the magnetic grey has more of a blue to it, it's very nice.

Everything else is the same or worse, I'm a little glad it doesn't fart and go off popping and banging all the time like the last one but I do miss the occasional pop. I've found sport mode makes it slightly better than in Cupra mode for noise but it is definitely a lot lot quieter.
Still a thirsty beast and actually feels quicker than the 300 even if it's no different, probably down to the smoother gearbox changes.

Are they the 7 speed dsg now? My 280 is the old DQ250 6 speed.

On my 2nd Cupra, both with the Soundaktor turned off through OBD11 and one with a res delete fitted. The different modes do change the noise of the car, with my res delete i would get pops in Cupra mode which i wouldn't get in comfort.

Unfortunately my ST doesn't make any noise now!!

The different engine settings literally just change the throttle response and the sound, they do nothing else at all.

When you say Cupra mode I guess you are talking about the Cupra preset and not just the engine setting. On DSG that auto puts the DSG into sport mode which might make more noise, on a manualI don't know if it does anything else.

It must have some kind of valve, as the exhaust only properly pops and crackles in Sport/Cupra mode, from what I've seen and heard. The idle noise in Cupra is also louder than comfort.

It does on the manual as well, between myself and my brother we have had 4 mk3 Cupra's. FL and PFL, Manual and DSG.

Whilst i agree they don't have a valved exhaust the modes 100% change the sound.

I read after the 280s they have deleted the centre silencer from factory, I don't know if there is any ECU change in the modes though.

I have a 46k DSG 280 and it DSG farts on upshift loud, thats in any mode in the gearbox or the engine setting, just upshift full throttle at over 4k RPM.

I've never heard any pops or bangs at all though.

The 300 was loud, almost embarrassingly so... in any mode with S engaged on the DSG every flat change paaaarrrrppppp, every downshift/overrun was pop pop pop bang bang.

The new 290 with the GPF is very quiet in comparison. In sport or Cupra engine modes you will get an occasional muted pop/bang/burble on overrun or a slight thud on upshift if timed perfectly but that's all. If the frequency of them happening was the same but a little bit louder it would be perfect.

Getting my Cupra 300 manual '18 plate from IMG Seat collected on the 14th April. Assuming the BCA will come on time.

Getting the Cupra 290 from zenauto delivered on the 15th April. Driven delivery apparently, will need to ask if they are desinfecting the car due to covid-19, as I'm at risk.. fun times.

Anyone else in the same predicament?

Just wipe all surfaces with anti bacterial wipes or a cloth with disinfectant if you are worried, thats all they could do anyway.

The 290 and 300 were louder and would get pops n bangs. The GPF 290 and 300 cars are silent.

My 300 ST has a GPF and twin back boxes, the only way to get more noise is a back box delete (not doing that) or an exhaust.

My Cupra 290 from the Zen deal back in November is finally booked for delivery on 11th June. It had been slated for delivery on 4th April but due to Covid-19 it's been sitting gathering dust somewhere in Peterborough! My previous Cupra 300 lease went back a couple of weeks ago and given the delays Zen arranged a courtesy car which was pretty good of them. A diesel VW Passat is not exactly what I was expecting but beggars can't be choosers!

That's good service from them, I have been quite impressed with the service I have received and my car is getting delivered on the 18th of June. Really looking forward to it now.

Communication with them has been a bit hit and miss, have had to keep chasing, but can't be too harsh on them given the unprecedented circumstances. And yes, a courtesy car for what's going to end up being almost a month is very good service. Enjoying the novelty and boot space of the Passat but can't wait to be back in a Cupra!

I’ve got a 290 Mag grey on order, delivery expected August. Will need to check insurance though given some comments in this thread.

How close are people getting to claimed mpg when driving steady (yes,I know, shouldn’t have bought a Cupra if I wanted efficiency!) unfortunately I won’t be ‘on its all the time!

I usually drive it like I stole it (between 17-21mpg) have done with both of them. However, when I use it for business miles I drive it relatively sensibly.

Just done 700 miles home-glasgow-home and averaged 38mpg, making progress but not driving like a loon. I think with slightly less progress being made you could crack 40mpg in it relatively easily.
