About 2 weeks ago my car started making an intermittent metal chingling sound (the best way I can describe it), it's not always there but this is what I have noticed.

1, It can happen while coasting.
2, it does it intermittently when I drive straight and turn right but NOT when I turn left.
3, seems to be most noticeable when driving a right hand bend up hill.
4, gentle application of the foot brake appears to stop the noise (but can't be 100% sure)
5, driving over bumps/pot holes makes no difference
6, with the front of the car jacked up there is no wheel wobble on either wheel (bearing)
7, brake pads on both wheels look completely fine and the callipers aren't sticking as both wheels run freely.
8, sound is loudest with the front passenger side window open, sounds like it's coming from the front left wheel (but sound can travel!)

My friend has taken off the front left wheel yesterday and checked the brake pads and checked for anything rubbing or loose and everything looks and sounds completely fine, going to check the driver side front today.

I don't know if it's my imagination or not but there does seem to be a very low pitched, quiet rumble sort of sound as well when I'm driving which is constant, nobody else can hear it though, only me!

Does anyone have any idea what this could be and give me some ideas of things to check? We're completely stumped, I even had it in the garage last week as I suspected it might be the ARB but they said everything looks completely fine.

Would really really appreciate some ideas, this is doing my head in now, been going on for like 2 weeks.

Thanks smile

"Chingling" and any other noises are notoriously difficult to diagnose on the internet.....but from what you describe and I'm assuming it's most noticeable at very slow / crawling speeds, I'm going to suggest a broken spring.

The 'chingling' could be the snapped off pigtail rattling around in the spring mounting. I would start at the back as they are notorious for snapping on MK5s. You might think it's coming from the front, but sound can travel under the car.

Dont take this the wrong way, but do you Ride the clutch? I saw this when being driven by a clutch rider, more of a wub wub, but only there on a turn...

I would go with that too. Can be intermittent and go with braking until they come totally detached.

The constant rumble could be your rear tyres, sounds almost like a bearing. They get a saw tooth edge and rumble. Only fix is new tyres but then it will eventually happen again. A four wheel alignment "may" fix it or "may" not but you won't know until knew tyres get worn.
